  • I actually know someone who changed her four month old baby's name from Annie to Catherine (Kate.)  Not sure how it went down legally...but she just always loved the name Kate and regretted not using it.  They called the baby Annie Kate for a while to adjust and now I think she is Kate to everyone.  But the point is yes, I think it can be done.
  • It is an option, but I understand it involves a lot of paperwork.

  • Better now than later. But are you sure you want to change it, or are you just having cold feet?

And I'm really curious - what are the names?

  • I believe you can change your child's name once before they turn 1 without having to pay a name change fee. GL with your decision!

  • I'm sure of the legalities of it, but I'm sure it can be done.  But, as others have pointed out are you sure you aren't just nervous about your choice? I have two children already and felt the same way at some point.  I am also curious what the names are.

  • I read a story in a magazine a while ago about a family who did this.  Their son was six months old.  The psychologist that had been interviewed for the purpose of the article said it is best to change  it in the first six months before a baby learns their name.  After about six months they start responding when you say their name.  I think it might have been in Parents magazine or something like that.  I think it is fairly uncommon, but it is possible.  If the name doesn't fit, change it!  I agree, the sooner the better.

  • If you havent' received the social security number yet, it will be easy to do. The info we filled out before leaving the hospital gets filed with the state. I was told it was a $12 fee to change any of the information, including misspellings and name changes, after we left the hospital.  It takes about 4 weeks before all that is submitted for the social number.

Good Luck. I'm still getting used to calling my 3 wk old her name. It seems odd and of course I second guess our decision but it will stay since it has meaning.

    What names???

  • I'm sure it varies from state to state, but our neighbor changed the name of her DD when she was about a month old without issue.  She told me that at the woman at birth certificate place said it could be done anytime without judicial intervention up to 6 months of age here.
