Any vegetarians?

I'm a vegetarian momma-to-be and now that I have my regular appetite back, I want to make sure I'm getting enough protein! Any advice or suggestions as to where I could find more (books/websites)? I've started making protein smoothies but am open to any tips from others out there :) Thanks in advance!

Re: Any vegetarians?

  • Hooray! Another vegetarian prego! I thought I was the only one. I bought a great book, called "The New Becoming Vegetarian", and there is a great section in there about vegetarian pregnancy, including a sample daily menu and appropriate serving sizes of things like beans. Do you eat milk and eggs? My midwife told me that as long as I included milk and eggs in my diet I could be a veg for the whole pregnancy. I am supposed to eat 6 small meals a day  with some protein in each meal, which can be cheese, nuts, a nut butter, eggs, etc...I also started carrying around a little container of blanched almonds (just a taste preference) to eat if I'm not by a meal or if I am feeling queasy. Oh, and the other thing is that I have read conflicting info about peanut butter and pregnancy (some say its fine, some say it causes peanut allergies), and my midwife says its fine and my med student husband looked up some stuff and also says its fine. I know this is a lot but I am just so happy to find another vegetarian out there!

  • Skinny *** Bun in the Oven is all vegan but has great reminders about what food ARE out  there. & recipes...

'vegan with avengence' is also a trendy vegan recipes book with EVERYTHING you can think of but too extravagant for me.

i have been vegetarian & then i ate high-quality meat here & there, now that im pregnant this babe has made me vegetarian agin,,, i love it!

tempeh, peanut butter, soy, tofu, some yogurts, & most beans are my favorite protein sources!

  • i find lentils to be a great way to get protein along with other beans, veggie burgers, and miso soup.

i also highly recommend this book for healthy recipes and food ideas [many people who love it are even meat eaters].

  • yay:)  more veggie preggos...i was vegan for two years due to lactose intolerance issues, but was a vegetarian for five years before that...i have been able to tolerate a bit more dairy (sliced cheese, yogurt and cotttage cheese) since i got preggo, which is great...i also wasnt able to tolerate much peanut butter before, but i have slowly added that back in:)

as far as high protein meals/snacks...here are a few of my faves:)

    • 1-2 tablespoons natural peanut butter with a sliced apple
    • 1/2 cup (or more) of lowfat cottage cheese with 1 cup fruit...just a half a cup of cottage cheese is 14 grams of protein...so i usually opt for 3/4 to 1 cup:)
    • yogurt and granola
    • 1 whole wheat bun (4gms protein), morningstar chik'n patty (8 gms protein), cheese slice (chedder-4 gms or swiss-6gms) and veganaise.  i usually have this for lunch/dinner with a vege and fruit, or for breakfast on the go with OJ...
    • whole wheat toast with vegan butter (1 tsp) and 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter...my second fave breakfast...
    • also, cereal with soymilk...great for late nite snacks:)  kashi go lean has lots of protein (14gms) per 3/4 cup and tastes great with sliced strawberries.
    • vege crumbles in pastas, chili, spaghetti sauce, etc...my hubby is a meat eater but loves the stuff:)
    • vege chili from scratch (4-5 kinds of beans with vege crumbles)...you can also partner this with cooked brown rice...great for lunch:)
    • chili-mac...i package kraft mac'n'cheese and one can of vege chili of choice or 2 cups homemade chili...plus vege/fruit
    • soups with lentils, kidney beans, and/or brown rice...
    • trader joe's meatless chicken nuggets (vegan) and veges...10 gms of proteing for 4 nuggets, and only 140 calories...

also, lots of fresh fruit and veges to snack on throughout the day and 1/4 cup raw almonds or plantars heart healthy mix with sea salt...im restricted to one cup of juice a day so try to get my OJ in the morning and lots of water at work...i also try to drink a large glass of soymilk at dinner...which is between 1-2 cups...so 10-14grms of protein too:)

hope that helps...send me a PM if you have any other questions...hope you all have a great thanksgiving...really looking forward to my tofurkey:)

  • I was vegetarian through both of my pregnancies and I tried to fit in a lot of eggs, soy, peanut butter, cottage cheese etc. through my pregnancies (and now). I find that if I shop at stores that kind of cater to vegetarians, Trader Joes and Whole Foods, it makes it pretty easy to get what I need because their is so much variety. I just ate as usual through my pregnancies (I've been a vegetarian for 20 years..I am 35 now) and didn't have any issues.

  • I'm so happy to see there are more vegetarians out there who are staying vegetarian while pregnant!  I have been a vegetarian almost all my life, and I am determined to stay that way when I get pregnant!!  Thanks for the inspiration, ladies!

  • I posted the same thing in 1st trimester a couple days ago! I eat dairy and seafood, but have otherwise been a vegetarian for 15 years. Since we're also supposed to watch how much seafood/mercury we consume while pg, I've been upping my protein intake via wgg-white omelettes, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, beans, tofu, edamame, and nuts. Another girl responsed to my post recommending breakfast smoothies made with yogurt and some protein powerd. FYI - My dr said while pg, I should aim to get 75 g of protien/day (as opposed to 50 g/day usually). GL!
  • I'm a vegetarian and was able to do it through out my pregnancy.  I usually started my day with a breakfast sandwich that included 2 eggs, morningstar grillers burger, some cheese and a whole wheat english muffin.  It was almost 40 grams of protein.  I snacked on cheese sticks, almonds and luna bars.  Once I got my breakfast in, it seemed pretty easy to get enough protein during the day.
