Success after IF

Coughing then throwing up

Grant's latest trick is to cough so hard that he makes himself throw up.  He did it at the mall this afternoon.  He was even so talented as to vomit on me, down my shirt and into my bra. The joys of being a mom!  It doesn't seem to bother him much, especially once we are past the moment of the upchuck.

Anyway, is this normal?  He got his 4 month shots this past Wednesday and the coughing/vomiting started shortly after that, on Thursday, I guess.  Will this go away?  He does not have reflux and generally doesn't spit up much.

  • Is he doing it on purpose?  It can be common around this age to realize that when they cough, people respond, so they keep going, and 'fake' cough.  If so, just try and ignore it and he'll stop.

  • I'm not sure that its a true fake cough, he is congested.  The first couple of times it happened, I think it was due to excessive phlegm (sp) and gunk that drained into his stomach.  Now, I'm not sure why its happening, but I do wonder if he has some control over it. . . if it continues for another day or two, I'm going to call the pedi.

  • G does this too. I don't think their systems are mature enough to be able to keep down stomach contents with a hard cough.

It's gross, but yeah, part of parenting. G's 14m old, and still does this.

  • Reagan does this sometimes too.  However, the last time when she did it consistently over a few days, I took her to the pedi and she was diagnosed with an ear infection.  So if it continues, you might want to take LO in.
