2nd Trimester

Fight with my brother :(

I love my brother to DEATH but he can be the biggest PITA.  Everything HE thinks is 100% right and if you don't agree, basically you're a moron. He never has an opinion or a discussion - he "tells" and if you don't agree, he jumps down your throat.

Tonight's fight was centered around the baby learning a second language and how my brother KNOWS that the baby needs to watch 1 hour of Spanish tv a day.  Dora, as I suggested, doesn't count and is stupid. This, from my brother who hasn't ever even babysat, never mind have children of his own!

I basically cut him off by saying "well, you don't have to worry about it because this isn't your baby" and he got all mean and nasty and now I'm in tears and DH, who does love my brother, is pissed too.

Re: Fight with my brother :(

  • Ah, does your brother fluently speak aother language.  If so, great, ask him what hour he will be spending with your LO teaching.  Sounds like you get some bath time to yourself after all!  :-)  If not, tell him to take a hike...  I have a brother that I love but occasionally (maybe often) want to shoot also.

  • ((laughing at your brother's suggestion));  DD watches some TV (Sprout, Sesame), just about EVERY show has some Spanish in it.  And if your brother is such a smarty pants he should know that the studies show a kid who learns a 2nd language early generally isn't ahead of any other kid (I'm talking about kids who are not from a family where 2 languages are spoken all the time)...why?  cuz they don't use the second language!

  • I'm sorry.  At the end of the day, it is your baby/child, so you make the call.  If neither you nor your husband speak fluent Spanish, then Dora and Sesame Street are good options.  I am a Spanish teacher, and although I personally think it is important to know at least 2 languages, your baby will have p l e n t y of time for that!  I think your brother is being silly.

    No te preocupes (don't worry!)

  • That's annoying.  I'm starting to realize that everyone you come in contact with (whether or not they have children) have an opinion on what you need to do with your baby when it arrives.  I've learned to smile and thank people for their 2 cents regardless of whether or not I feel it is useful information.  Sometimes it just isn't worth the argument!
