Those who had an episiotimy

How long did it take for it to heal?  When did your stitches start to fall out?

I ask because I recently started having stitches fall out and I am terrified of having an assgina.

Re: Those who had an episiotimy

  • WOAH! the stitches fall out? I had a tear, and got stitches....I think mine are supposed to dissolve

  • I believe it was 3 weeks for me when I started noticing a difference. My stitches were gone by 5 weeks, which meant I was healed too.
  • The stitches should dissolve. If you think they are falling out I would ask your doc.
  • I had a 4th degree tear and my stitches "just" started falling out over the past few weeks but I also had on the upwards of like 30 stitches.

    I'd say that's totally normal.

And don't let the pp scare you--parts of them start to dissolve and then little pieces are left that "fall out."  It's totally normal :-)

  • I don't remember anything falling out but I was back to normal down there at 3 wks.
  • Doc said they'd be gone in 7-10 days, and they were.
  • My doc said the pieces would dissolve that were in my skin and the rest would fall out.  It's starting to feel better down there, just worried that they're coming out too early and 6 weeks seems like a long to wait to check!

Holy shiznit- THIRTY stitches?!  You're my hero.

  • I had an episiotomy w/ my 1st and a tear this time, both 2nd degree. My OB uses the stitches that dissolve and I was told that they should be dissolved by around 2 weeks. I had to go in to the ER around day 12 and the lady doing the vag. u/s didn't know I'd had stitches, so they must have already been dissolved by then! So I don't think you have to worry :)

  • Are you sure your stitches are supposed to fall out?  I had one fall out and my doctor had me come in right away because they are supposed to dissolve.  She thought about putting another stitch in, but decided to leave it alone because it was healing fine.  I think it takes about 6 weeks to fully heal, but mine are starting to feel a lot better.

  • Mine dissolved. I haven't felt any pain or itching for the last week and a half or so.

  • I thought you meant that you thought a stitch ripped out, sorry. I definitely don't think my stitches were gone that soon though.
  • mine weren't all the way dissolved at my 6 week appt. i'm not sure when they did dissolve, but i assume soon after that. i had a 2nd degree tear too.

    Haha--thanks :-)

I tore everything from my vag to my rectum (talk about vaganus/assigna) and all the way down through the muscle.  She had to actually stitch my sphincter muscle back together for my pooper to work properly.  I was in a LOT of pain for about 2 1/2w then I finally started to feel better--then I got the flu and coughed violently for several weeks :( Talk about starting back at square one.

  • Just to be safe, if it seems like you aren't healing right or still have any pain I would call the doc. I was still in a good bit of pain 3 weeks out and my doc had me go back in to be checked. It turned out my stitches had torn and I had to use Premarin to increase healing and then eventually have a "perineal plasti" surgery in which I had to be re-sewn. She said if I had come in earlier it wouldn't have been such a big deal and I may not have had to have the full on surgery. (Not a good time! I'm just now starting to feel normal again down there.)

  • I had a midline episiotomy when my DS was born almost 5 months ago.  I had dissolvable stitches so not sure when they melted away, but I'm still experiencing pain with it 20 weeks after the fact :(

Apparently mine was pretty gnarly, but it kills when I have a BM and DTD is definitely uncomfortable.

  • I never saw mine fall out, but I do believe they dissolved. At my 2 week pp they were all gone and I had a 3rd degree tear but not sure how many stitches I had.
