Breastfeeding

successful BF AND bottle/pacifier use?

i have introduced a bottle and also a pacifier. they are both really helpful to me. But on week 2, my nipples are still so sore. To the point where I am doing one formula feeding a day, and one breast milk bottle (while pumping both times) just to give them a break to "heal"Am I confusing his sucking? I  know LLL is against artificial nipples and pacis, but they seem a little hard core for me....

  • we breastfeed, bottle feed and give him a paci and it all seems to be successful:)?

  • I EBF both my girls for 12mos and almost 14mos (still going w/ baby #2) and my oldest daughter took a paci from Day 1. Never any nipple confusion - no problems. We never had to supplement so I can't speak for bottles (neither baby would never take pumped milk either, the little stinkers!)  I see no problem w/ a pacifier and successful long-term BFing.
  • Some people say you are confusing them.  DS had a pacifier until he was 6 months old and also used a bottle from the about 2 weeks on.  He is still breastfeeding at 14.5 months so we obviously didn't cause any confusion.  Good luck.
  • we have used a paci the whole time, and not had problems, and used a bottle from 4 wks on, with no problems. he still prefers me : )

  • We used a Soothie from day one, and a bottle (regular, then a "breastfeeding friendly" bottle) from day 3.

She went into the hospital and couldn't feed at the breast. We *did* struggle with latch issues in the beginning, but I think that was much more about her size (5lbs) and not enough practice in the beginning.

She loves the paci, but love mommy more.

I did that the first 4-5 weeks until my nipples stopped hurting. Everything was fine.

  • We use a binkie and have since day one. She was in the NICU and had a paci before she ever got to try BFing.?

I started block feeding and that really helped with the soreness. Ibprofen (sp?) about a half an hour before nursing helped too. It gets better!?Be careful not to do too many formula feedings. Don't want to get into the habit. I had to toss it all out so I wouldn't use it!

  • My first always refused a paci and took the bottle just fine, but always preferred me. My second now, likes the soothie paci only and is grumbling about the bottle now and then, she also prefers mom feedings.  I sometimes think the nipple confusion thing is to scare moms so they don't try the bottle and give up breastfeeding, just my opinion.  I have always thought breastfeeding is so much easier than bottles, no bottles and formula to pack in the diaper bag, no washing bottles and no heating them while baby screams.  I am always ready, always have the container and never any heating involved.hahaha

Also about the soreness, with both my girls I was very sore for the first week or two, but I found that the pump would make it worse, the girls nursing were easier on me than the pump.
