? for those who had Group B Strep

I posted this on the 3rd tri board, but thought you ladies might be able to help as well....

I was diagnosed with Group B Strep at my 37 week appointment.  I know it isn't a big deal but I was wondering what I will have to go through to get the antibiotics during delivery.  I would ideally like to labor in many different positions (including a bath tub) and I wanted to make sure I would still be able to do this since I have to get the antibiotics.  My doctor is an a$$ and said "yeah, i guess you could still do that."  Needless to say I don't feel confident in his response.  I have heard that you have to have it administered to you every 4 hours.  Is that through an IV?  How long will it take to get a single dose?  Would I still be able to have a Haplock instead of being constantly hooked up to an IV?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.     I went early, and they didn't know if I had GBS, so they gave me the antibiotics just in case.

     

    Mine was through an IV, and I think it was going the whole time I was in the hospital before I delivered.  I was also hooked to an IV for fluids, so it wasn't a big deal.

    I was GBS+ and had wanted the heplock but it wasn't feasible when I got there.  I was hooked up to it the whole time but did move around (holding the pole).  Yes it was a pain but we made it work.

    Mine was infused IV over 15-30 minutes every 4 hours. It kind of burns so they slow it down if it does. I had an IV line placed in my arm but I also had lots of fluids running and pitocin.

    I had it, and they were worried that I wasn't going to get the full dose because I was at a 5 when I got to the hospital, and had progressed to 6 1/2 in less than an hour.  They gave me an IV, and they said that I needed to have it going for 4 hours to get the whole thing.  So it was a continuous IV, not just a single shot into the IV or whatever.  I ended up going through 2 bags before I had DS.  I don't know about being able to labor in a tub, but otherwise I was able to move around as much as I wanted (until I got the epi).  The nurses even showed me how to unhook myself from the monitors so that I could get out of the bed... I just had to pull the IV thing around with me.  Good luck!

    I labored for 6 hours and I only got 2 doses not 3 because I had to go for a csection but I was only allowed limited movement due to the IV

    I had the IV put in and had to get it every 4 hours it took about an hour. In between they would disconnect it and I could do whatever I wanted. While getting the antibiotic I could walk just would have to push the thing.

    This. I was hooked up to an IV the whole time..when the antibiotics ran out they just added a new bag, there weren't any breaks. It was annoying being attached to the pole but I was still able to try different positions.

    This. I also only got one and a half doses because DS was impatient.

    I was on penicillin, administered every 4 hours.

    I was able to labor on the ball and in the tub. I had a lock and they would just hook it up, drip a bag in, and take it out again and I would be free to go. Even when I was hooked up to the IV I could get off the bed and sit on the ball, and go into the bathroom. There is some choreography involved, but it's all about the layout of your room and the hospital.

    My biggest issue was that penicillin *burns* like a MF. They cut it with saline, but every once in awhile the ratio would tweak and I would feel like my hand was on fire while getting run over by a truck. If I were doing it again I would ask for something that is not penicillin, if possible.
