Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Breast milk

My daughter was stillborn last Wednesday and my milk came in friday/saturday. My breast are hard as rocks. I am using cabbage for the pain.

Does anybody know how long it takes for breast milk to dry out ? Any suggestions as to how to make it dry out faster ?

TIA

Re: Breast milk

  • My Daughter was stillborn on 11/7 my milk came in that wed after still leaking today. My Docs nurse told me I can go awhile with the leaking told me to get a sports bra and it will limit some of the leaking. It sucks.

  • I am already wearing the sport bra...

    this truly sucks !

  • completely agree...insult to injury. Should be when something like this happens the milk just knows not to come but nope.
  • I am so sorry hun. You are going through a mountain of pain right now... I know.... I obviously have been there.

I delivered Haleigh over 3 months ago and I hate to tell you.... but, I still have "some" milk. If I sqeeze a nip - a drop or two will still come out. In the begining there was 10x's more milk.... so the quanitity has definately gone down.

I would recommend that you wrap your breasts w/ an ace bandage and maybe cabbage leaves to stop the milk. Although I haven't dont it- I have heard from many women that it works. Personally, the wrapping my breast w/ bandages and cabbage was a bigger reminder than a squirk of milk every once in a while. There is also a shot your OB can give you to make your supply dry up also.

I don't know you story.... and I don't know you... but, if you ever want to talk, vent, whatever... let me know. I have talked to a couple ladies from thebump on the phone. It is really nice to talk to someone who really understand the layers of pain that you are going through. I found when talking to friends and loved ones IRL- that I had to explain why inconsequencial occurance hurt so much... while people that have been through this terrible experience don't need an explaination.... we just get it.

    Take care yourself....

  • I kept mine wrapped with an ace bandage consistanly for a week.  After a week of being bandaged, they dried up.  The wrapping gave them more support and also kept them from being stimulated.  The only time I unwrapped was to shower/change bras.  Also when you shower try to stay out of the direct spray.  That will also cause you to leak.  The more you leak, the more your body will make.

I found the tighter they were wrapped, the better it felt.  I had more support, so they were not as painful.  I never did the cabbage leaves.

Good luck.  I know it is painful and a horrible reminder, so I hope they dry up faster.  I am so sorry you have to go through this.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. That is just awful. Do they know what happened?

I'm with everyone else--it's like adding insult to injury when your milk comes in. I kept mine wrapped tight, used cabbage leaves, took benadryl to help dry them out and tried to keep them from getting wet/warm in the shower--I could feel the milk drop when that happened.

Just be really careful to not stimulate them, as it'll make it worse and make it take longer.

    Good luck... ((HUGS))

Thank you. Actually today we packed her bedroom, and furniture. We were both ok. I don't know if this is normal, to be so ok so fast... maybe we'll have a breakdown later on. Who knows. But in the meantime, we feel like we are doing well, under the circumstances.

  • I am so sorry for your loss! How awful! I hope this board will help you grieve. it has definately helped me.

My dr's office has a lactation consultant who told me peppermint dries you up quickly. I have been eating a lot of peppermint candy canes and it really does help. You can also use real peppermint extract or if you like tea, there's peppermint tea out too. For me, sports bras didn't help me dry up, but do make things more comfortable.

Yeah, who knows what's "normal" anyway--what I've learned is that we all react differently and things change drastically from day to day. You've just gotta keep putting one foot in front of the other and take care of yourself, even if it makes you feel a wee bit selfish. You  need it!

  • I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.  Like the other ladies said binding your breasts, cold cabbage leaves, and no hot showers.  The hot water will make your milk come in faster.

My milk took about a month to completely dry up..
