I applied for Short Term Disability throught my current insurance provider and my application came back denied due to "existing pregnancey and height and weight ratio" Pregnancey is not concidered a pre-existing condition, it says so right on their website. Then it says I can re-aply postpartum...but my height and weight ratio will still be the same then. So to me is seems that they are denieing the application due to the pregnancey itselft. I am going to appeal this and will be contacting my HR department, the insurance company and my doctor monday! However, I am 6' tall and overweight, but healthy as a horse...great blood pressure, all my medical stats and cholesterol levels are great etc. Can I/Should I also appeal my height and weight ratio??
Does anyone have any experiance/knowledge on any of this???
Re: Help With Short Term Disability
I might not be a lot of help...I'm no expert, but...
Can you apply for a disability before you have the disability? I guess I didn't have to apply for it through my company. You just automatically qualify for 6 weeks disability for vag birth and 8 weeks for c-section.
Sorry, I told you I wouldn't be much help.
I was told with mine that I had to apply for it before I was pregnant or it would not be covered.
i believe pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition - that has been my experience in dealing with STD anyways... i have always been told that you must have STD for at least a year before you can use it for your maternity leave.... now this may vary from state to state - but it was the same when i was living in PA, NC, and now in GA...
you might be SOL
That is correct.....Under the "Family Medical Leave Act" you are awareded 12 weeks of UNPAID time off. Short Term Disability will cover up to a x amount of weeks PAID
So I get time off, I just want my money hehehe
It does vary from state to state and insurance to insurance. It is not a pre-existing condition through my provider. I guess the height to weight thing is just a loop hole for them.
Not for regular insurnace but for STD, you have a window of time before it takes effect, somthing like 8-12 weeks? You can't get pregnant with in that window of time...
PG is not a pre-existing condition. You can NOT apply for STD until you are officially "disabled."
Therefore, don't apply until after you've had the baby. Most plans make you wait a certain amount of time before they start paying you anyway (my plan is 30 days). Talk to your HR department to find out the exact details of your plan. Mine is through work as well b/c PA does not have state STD, only private.

This post is not true. You have to apply and have the insurance before you are disabled. You apply for the money/benefits after being disabled, but you already have to have the insurance.
For mine pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition so I could get it while I was pregnant, but mine does have a year waiting period before pregnancy related disability is covered. So while I could be covered for injury, I can't be covered for maternity. Yours may have that, too.
