Are they worth it? My fiancee was 9 lb 8 oz and is 6'4'' and I was 9 lb 4 oz, so we expect LO to be on the larger side, and I've heard these don't last long before being outgrown so as it is. However, I love the one I received as a shower gift, and I am very attracted to the idea of co-sleeping.
The main reason I'm considering not keeping it is that I desperately need to purchase a Medela pump for when I go back to work, and exchanging the $140 co-sleeper to make a dent in the $400 pricetag of the pump is really appealing...
Re: Co-sleepers. Discuss.
I purchased a co-sleeper and returned it the next day because I wasn't a fan.
1. We have a queen - and we are both small, and the co sleeper left very little room for us to comfortably move.
2. I like to snuggle with B and although the co-sleeper was in bed with us, I couldn't cuddle him.
We have now side-carred our crib and it works really well for us.
I LOVE OUR COSLEEPER! Yes I was yelling.
I think I'd be crazy and injured without it. We had the pnp in our room before we got the cosleeper and I would get out of bed so fast I fell into the wall a few times. Thankfully before I had the babe in arms. I love that I can just glance over at her and not have to lift my head off the pillow. We can't bedshare because my DH is a wild sleeper and the few times I've had her in the bed with me she didn't sleep nearly as well which means I didn't either. And this just seems safer to me. I don't have to stress about blankets etc.?
We have the Arms Reach Original. The weight limit is 30lbs and LO is 6mo and 14lbs so we have a while. And when she's out of it we can use it as a pnp. It also has pockets all around the outside which I keep everything that I would normally have on my night stand so I'm not loosing out on that either.?
No I don't work for the company...but if they wanted to send me free stuff I won't say no!?
?
?
Maybe I should have qualified... We have the kind that attaches to the side of the bed. We had one that went between our pillows and that didn't last very long but only cost about 20 bucks so for a few nights it wasn't that bad. I so wish we had the Arms Reach when we brought her home. Wwould have be SO nice!
I also love my Arm's Reach! Bedsharing didn't work for us; I am a horrible, horrible sleeper, so my tossing and turning and getting up in the middle of the night would only be bad news for DS. Instead he's right next to me, and I can easily touch and comfort him if he needs it.
We have the mini, but I wish we had gotten the original. DS is not close to outgrowing it, but he is on the smaller side.
As to the cost, you might be able to buy one used-have you checked your local craigslist or freecycle?
Also, don't neccessarily assume you'll have big baby! DH and I were both big, but DS was only 6lbs 15oz and everyone (MW, U/S techs) thought he was going to be huge.
We didn't use a co-sleeper, but I would have loved one! It would be much easier than having the PNP in our room.
Have you checked with your insurance to see if they'll cover the breast pump?
Are you talking about the standard? I can see the Mini not lasting long, but not the standard.
DS is 11 mos. and it's what he sleeps in (before being brought into our bed) every.single.night. And he's in the 80th percentile for length so he's no shrimp.
ETA- obviously we no longer use the raised basinette. but he still sleeps in it every night.
DD slept in bed with me. I was a single mother so it wasn't hard for my full sized bed to accomodate both of us. When DS was born, I thought a cosleeper would be great because it would be the best of both worlds: DH and I had the bed to ourselves but DS was right there. Well, my DS didn't like the cosleeper. He actually prefers to sleep in his crib. Maybe it was because DH can be a snorer. Maybe it's because the crib matress is a little more plush. Who knows? It was hard to believe.
I believe an attached parent is, above anything else, a parent who knows on a very deep level what their child wants. Mine wanted his crib. He is probably a rare case but yours could be the same way. I think there are several ways to cosleep but only one way to BF and pump. I had so many challenges BFing DD (and not enough support) that I ended up switching to formula. I guess b/c of this I feel like whatever you have to do to maintain a BFing relationship is tantamount.
Sorry, that was long!
We have the Arm's Reach and I wish we didn't get it because DS didn't like it. We ended up bedsharing and how I have to try and sell it on Craig's List.
I PPH our Arm's Reach. We are both thrashy/heavy sleepers so it was not safe for us to bedshare when Jack was tiny.
We were also big babies who had a tiny (6lb3oz) baby born at 41 weeks. Anything can happen :-) Oh and that was after our 2-week-earlier growth scan estimated at least 8.5lbs...which even if it was off +/-1lb it was still way off.
we have an arm's reach mini that i got cheap/used from a coworker. DD hated *HATED* it until she about 2mos old. would only sleep in our arms or in the snugglenest in her earliest months.
now we use the mini for when she first goes down at night, and we bring her into bed with us at her first waking. bedshare the rest of the night. i like having it but we don't have a PnP or similar, so we've needed it for that a few times. she's long, way above 90% for length, and she still just fits at 6mos. i think the real limit on all the ARCS is that no model is safe to use once your baby is pulling up to their hands/knees. for a lot of kiddos, that will be before the hit the length or weight limits.
on the pump, try calling a few LCs and get pricing on the medela you want thru them. i have a freestyle that i got for much less through an LC than i could have online or at a real store.
Same here..in addition to that my dd would only sleep with me and still does!

Slightly unrelated note: I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Blue Cross covers 50% of the cost of my breast pump ("medical supplies).
Give your insurance company a call and see if they cover part of the cost.
