milk

We had our 9-month visit at the doc yesterday.  My LO has always been either off the chart or just at the bottom....which doesn't bother me much because I know he eats plenty (he's now 16lbs, 29in).  I EBF about 4-5x day and he eats 3 solid meals plus snacks.  He loves his food!  Anyway, the doc told me to increase his dairy because he needs all the calories he can get.  I usually give him one "smoothie" a day made with whole milk yogurt and bananas and mango.  I also add yogurt to his oatmeal and fruit in the morning.  I asked the doc if I should start whole milk and he didn't give me a clear answer.  He said babies can take up to until 15 months to develop a taste for milk, but that didn't really answer my question.  Should I wait until he's a year to start milk, do you think, or should I start now?  My doc obviously doesn't feel strongly one way or another!

  • At 9 months when you're still nursing?  No.  Not necessary.

I'd offer even more food.  Have you introduced cheese yet?  Most kids LOVE it.  And if you want some extra fat in his diet, that's an easy way to do it.  Just make sure that you balance it out with high fibre foods and fruit... you don't want him constipated. That high fibre multigrain bred has a lot of calories and some fat.  Does he eat a lot of that?

Ditto.  I'd try things like cheese, avocado, egg yolk, etc.  Stuff packed with good fats & calories.

  • I agree with the pp's, try cheese or other dairy products. DS loves cheese.  I am still nursing 4-5 times a day as well and just introduced cow's milk in the past month (so when DS was 17 months).  He gets a cup of cow's milk at daycare and sometimes on the weekends.

  • I wouldn't do whole milk... I would do avacado, eggs, yogurt, etc. do you pump at all? You could let him carry a sippy of BM... that might encourage him to drink throughout the day. Or do a nibble tray every morning? Some avacado slices, cheese cubes, hard boiled egg, etc that he can snack on ...
