Babies: 0 - 3 Months

bedtime for 2 month old...

What time does your 2 month old go to bed at night?  We are experimenting with different bedtimes.  Mainly, we're taking his cues and when he gets tired in the evening we do the bedtime routine.  But, a lot of nights he starts fussing at about 6:30, and that is way too early for bed, but too late for a nap.  I'm not sure what to do.  Oh, and he sleeps for about a 6 hour stretch at night before waking to eat.

Re: bedtime for 2 month old...

  • Mine usually goes down around 8 or 8:30. She gets fussy around 5pm and takes little cat naps in between then and falling asleep.

  • DD is a nightowl...she usually goes to sleep between 11 and 12 and then sleeps until between 8 or 9.
  • G gets fussy around 5:30/6:00.  I didnt think there was any sense in fighting it ... if she wants to sleep at that time, then she should be able to.

She generally gets into her bassinet at 6:30 and sleeps until 12:30/1:00.  From there she will be up every 2-3 hours until morning.  This works out fine for me.

This, he cluster feeds from about 4:30 - 8:30 then usually falls asleep after the 8:30 feeding...

  • Mine is about the same, although lately she's been sleeping 7 hours and then eating and sleeping another 4. .

I think it depends on your schedule and whether you are home or go to work. I read DD's cues but also put her down by 9 if she isn't asleep yet b/c I go to bed at 10, and that way I get at least 9 - 10 hours of sleep (albeit interrupted once). If I had to get up earlier in the morning, I would probably try to get her to bed earlier. But, I want her to sleep when I sleep so I can maximize my sleep.

  • Just realized you said 2 mo. old...whoops!
  • We don't believe in deciding when is appropriate for him to sleep. He sleeps when he's tired.

    This exactly.

  • He usually goes down between 8 - 9pm, and sleeps 6 to 7 hours.

  • I wonder if you could stretch it out til 7 and start a routine then in hopes she's in bed closer to 8, a more reasonable bedtime. That's essentially what we've started (6.5 weeks old) and dd has had no problem with it. We give her a short bath, dry her, clean diaper, go upstairs and read a few books and give her a bottle (or reverse books and bottle depending how fussy she is). By that time, it's been about 30-45 minutes since we started the routine and she starts to fall asleep. I wake her to feed before I go to sleep because her stretch at night isn't more than 3-4 hours just yet. It works well for us.
  • He goes to bed at 7.  If it's any later, he's cranky and difficult to get to bed.

This. But you have to do what works for you. If you want more consistency and to be able to train him to sleep then you could try to push his naps back a little each day so that his last nap before bedtime isn't so late.

  • DD is the same way.  Tonight she was in her crib asleep by 7:30.  She'll sleep until 12-1, eat, and then sleep for 3 hours, eat again and sleep for a couple hours.  I usually get her up between 7-8 am.  I'm hoping that once she's older, we'll just be able to cut out a night feeding or two.

  • DD takes a nap around 6-630.  I get her up around 7-730. She takes a bath at 730, gets her bedtime bottle after that and is asleep by 830.  Sometimes she wakes up when I put her in her crib, but she normally doesnt finish her bottle so I just give her a little more and she falls right back to sleep.
  • LO's bedtime is anytime between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. but it takes a good hour for the whole routine so he's usually asleep by 9:30 at the latest. He takes a late afternoon (4 to 8ish) nap.
  • I play w/both 7 and 9ish..and 7 actually works the best for us right now.  Last night he slept from 7 til' 0400 and then from 6 to 8.   Right now he is awake cause daddy was bonding w/him (he gets home from work at 7 so its hard)...but now baby is fussy and mommy steps in LOL

  • Matty's been going to bed btw 630-7pm since he was about 2 m/o.  He sleeps from 8-10 hours before he wakes to eat, and then another 3-5. (For a total of about 13 nighttime hours, minus the 1/2hour he's awake to eat.)  JD was the same way.  I love it; it gives me time to myself after a long day.  Anyway, I am a firm believer in early bedtimes for little ones, and the whole sleep begets sleep thing.  I'm just glad they've both been on board w/ it! ;)
