Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

f/u- WWYD-Hawaii in 2.5 weeks, but waiting to naturally m/c?

Sorry this is a spin-off of my previous post. I am waiting to naturally m/c. So far, no signs of it.  We are supposed to go to Maui in 2.5 weeks.  Since I have never been through a m/c before I have no idea what to expect.  Physically (assuming I have a natural m/c), what should I expect? Do you think going to Hawaii is wise?  Any advice?

I have no problem canceling our trip.  We have been to Hawaii numerous times. I just thought emotionally (maybe, I dont know) that it might be good for us (we were married there)??

  • I opted for a D&C so that I wouldn't have to guess when I would naturally miscarry, so I'm sorry that I can't offer any advice on that from a physical aspect, but I REALLY hope you can still go to Maui!!  I got married there too and I know I would love to be there right now - I think it definitely would help emotionally. Smile Good luck.

  • I'm going thru a natural m/c right now. I found out Tuesday that my baby had no heartbeat, but it looks like development stopped about ten days ago. This past weekend I had some brown spotting that got a little more red thru Tuesday. Wednesday I started bright red, pretty heavy bleeding, like my usual period on the heaviest day, with just some mild cramps. I haven't missed a day of work yet so it's...gross...but not too uncomfortable. Today it's gotten even heavier, and i'm seeing some clots. Still mild cramps, so I think the worst is yet to come. I hope it is over soon! I'll update over the weekend, but I do think it varies. My doc said it could be days or even weeks before it decided to start, and even then a d & c could be necessary if all the tissue wasn't expelled. I have a d & c scheduled for Tuesday, just in case.

I'll keep you in my thoughts. I'd hate for you to miss MAUI! And I do think that the time together would be beneficial. Good luck to you!

  • My early, natural m/c was much like a period.  Every woman experiences hers differently.

I think this trip could be a relief for you.  I'd go.

  • I had a natural m/c last week.  Almost all the tissue and big clots came out Thursday night in the ER; since then it's been like a normal period and has pretty much tapered off to just spotting.  (Sorry for the graphic description)

How late can you cancel your trip?  If it happens before you leave, I'd still go.  If it still hasn't happened, I would probably not, just because I'd be uncomfortable being far away from my doctor/in-network hospital, just in case I hemorrhaged or something.  I do think that a trip would be good for you, emotionally, if your doctor says it's ok.

I can cancel up to 3 days before.  In between now and our trip we also have my husbands military Xmas party which I am in charge of. Not something I feel like doing now AT ALL. I am just trying to remain positive and my toddler is not letting me get down at all ( he is a firecracker).

  • If you can maybe back out of being in charge of party, if that is an option? That sounds stressful and you probably don't need that right now. AS far as Hawaii goes, I would go. I have been to Hawaii many, many times and feel it is therapeutic and rejuvenating and cleansing. If you m/c BEFORE the trip then it could be great for you guys to relax, do nothing, and love each other and mend in Hawaii. If you haven't had your natural m/c by the cancellation date, then I would cancel. I can think of nothing worse then potentially being in the peak of a m/c on a plane!

Once I started spotting and was told that I was having a miscarriage it all happened pretty fast. It was fast, but intense with extreme contractions spaced 3 minutes apart. I felt like it was a "mini labor", the only way to wrap my mind around it, that I had to labor out what my body had already begun to grow. I had to get in a hot bath to ease the contractions and the discomfort. And I did end up eventually see the beginning of the baby, not very pretty...very disturbing for me. I wouldn't want to be any where but the comfort of my own home for that one. But to each his own.

Two weeks is a bit of time from now though. Hopefully your body can do what it needs to do and you can be able to fulfill this trip, which I can't imagine would be any worse than mourning at home, it will hurt where ever you are, might as well be in Hawaii.

p.s. My DH and I honeymooned in Maui. In upcountry Maui, near the town of Kula, is the Alii Kula Lavender farm. It was heaven and being there touched my soul. If you DO go, try to make it here. Maybe it could be a great healing place for you to visit.

  • I have had 2 natural m/c now - one at 5.5 weeks, one at 10 weeks.  First one was a very very bad period with horrible cramps.  Second one about 2 weeks ago was horrific to be honest.  As another pp said, I had to go through contractions and labor.

Each time it took about 1.5 weeks from the time I found out to the actual m/c process.  However, every woman is different.  A friend of mine took a little over 2 weeks to naturally m/c.  Another friend only 3 days.

If you have not m/c by the time of the cancellation deadline, I would definitely cancel the trip.  Personally, I would not want to be away from home and away from my doctors and hospital system in case something went wrong.
