xp: health insurance ?

I thought it might be helpful to ask this over here as well. Especially since you ladies probably have some experience with looking at your benefits.

DH and I are looking into paying for our own health insurance out of pocket as opposed to through an employer. Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm having a hard time figuring all of this stuff out! I want to have maternity benefits, getting pg right now would be a disaster so that's not really on the table, but if something happens I don't want to pay for all of it out of pocket either... So I'm stuck, and frustrated with stupid insurance lingo that gives me a headache to read.. Help!

Re: xp: health insurance ?

  • I don't have much experience with this but all of the people I know who pay for their own out of pocket have Blue Cross Blue Shield.  It is supposed to have decent benefits.  I also know Unicare denied me coverage because I had a bladder infection almost a year before I applied, so I would be afraid they would screw you if you got sick.

  • I'm curious as to why you wouldn't want to go through your employer??  It's usually subsidized & costs a lot less than paying out of pocket?!
  • I have blue shield, there is only one package that will cover future maternity so make sure you ask when calling around. My plan I pay 2000 out of pocket before they started paying anything. After that they pay 70%. I still have forked out ALOT over this pregnancy. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the help ladies!

Annie- to answer your question, we have benefits through DH's employer now, but he hates his job. He will start teaching hopefully in Jan. but it will only be part time, so no benefits. I am still currently unemployed, so obviously no benefits there either. We are looking into other options for the time being. Once DH (hopefully) gets a FT teaching position we would have employer benefits, but I don't want to not have insurance while waiting for that. Especially because it could be a year or more. I may get a job with benefits offered soon, as I have an interview on Tues., but the position it is for is not something permanent for me.  There's a whole long vent about the job situation in my blog if you want more details. I just wish it would all get settled already.

  • Oh- and Libertad- the one BCBS plan I checked out and added maternity benefits to only covered up to $2,500. in maternity benefits. I'm thinking that would get used up pretty quickly.
  • Ahhhh, ok.  I was just curious b/c I know OOP is expensive....I didn't know it was like $2,000 expensive though--WOW!!  I sure hope that one of you is able to find a job that will provide benenfits & you like!!
