choose OB close to home? or work?

I'm in the process of finding an OB and hospital, but don't know if it's better to have someone whose office is close to my work or home. I'm thinking I'll only be going to the hospital once, right? Whereas I'll be going to the OB every few weeks.

What would you do?

Re: choose OB close to home? or work?

  • An OB is associated with a certain hospital, so you should look at an OB and who they are associated with in order to make the best decision for you.

  • I say go to the OB who you feel most comfortable with whether it is close to home or work or not.  I suggest going on some meet and greets before you chose.

But, yes, you will be at your OB's a lot, so if you are impartial to who you go to, I would say closer to home.

  • My OB and hospital is close to my home and I'm about 30 miles from work.  My OB is also my gyno and I chose her close to my home because I wasn't sure if I would change jobs in the future and find something closer to home.  Also my DH goes to my appts with me and it would be inconvenient for him to have to come to one that is by my work, so instead I make the appointments for early morning or late afternoon and then either go into the office after or work from home.

  • I chose my OB based on feedback from other women in my area and the fact that I really liked her and the other doctors in the office (and association with the hospital I wanted to deliver at)

This resulted in an OB about 45-55 minutes from my house but I wouldn't do it any other way because I love LOVE my OB and feel so comfortable and confident in her abilities.

edit: it WAS close to where I worked and where DH's office is--but I got laid off so now its a hike from home but still better for DH so he can go to some apts with me.

  • I had this dilemma as well since I work very close to one hospital but live closer to another. Both hospitals seem to be off equal standings so it was more based on what was convenient. I am not overly thrilled about my OB/GYN however it has been extremely convenient using one by my work. With all of the appointments, blood work, u/s it is easy to sneak out of work for 1/2 hour than for 2 hours.
  • Luckily, I am not picky at all when it comes to doctors, some women need to feel right, I'm pretty laid back. So a few years ago I just looked for the Gyno nearest my work so I could go on lunch breaks and not use any PTO. Turns out that group has an office a mile from my house as well. So now that I am pregnant it makes it easy to schedule appointments during the day at work when I don't need DH there and night appointments at home for when I want DH there. I also love the group, so I defintiely lucked out. But if I had to choose, I would chooes close to work, assuming they have priveledges in the best hospital in your area, I'm also lucky with that aspect. Going once a month and then once a week would not fly, I couldn't be late for work that often.

  • I followed my primary care physician's recommendation (she had 2 babies recently and referred me to her personal OB). Even though the office is about 30 minutes from my house and another 30 minutes from work, I couldn't be happier with my doctor or the office staff. Very friendly and helpful and will call back within an hour or so if I have any questions.

Well, how far do you live from where you work?

If its far, I would personally find one closer to home. If you go on maternity leave earlier than expected (ie; bed rest) you would then have farther to drive for your appointments. Also, if you start going into labor at home it may be better to have a hospital closer.

On another note, even if your job situation is pretty secure, you never know what could happen. If you were to lose your job it would suck to have to go far for an appointment.

If you're concerned about appointments you can try scheduling the appointments as early as possible and then go to work after the appointments

  • My OB isn't near my home OR my work, about a 35 minute drive (w/o traffic), but it the same OB I have been going to for YEARS and I am very comfortable with him.  In fact before I was even in committed relationship, I considered chosing my OB based on this very situation, who I wanted to be my doctor during my pregnancy and hopefully delivery.  And just as luck would have it, they built a BRAND NEW, gorgeous birthing facility that just opened up in January of this year and I hear it is phenomenal.  I am excited to take a tour!

  • For me, it was a combination of the hospital's reputation, ease of getting to appointments, and in-network for my insurance plan. I was lucky enough to find an OB & hospital with a good reputation and fairly central to where I live and work.
  • luckily my OB goes to three different offices. one is close to my work, and the other, my home! So I can choose where to make appointments... more likely I'll pick the office near work since they aren't open on the weekends anyway :) but it's nice to have options. The hospital I'll deliver at is 10 mins from my house and about 5 from my parents too.
