NTR: ? If you live in a brick home

How do you hang things on the exterior of your home?  We would like to hang a wreath and garland over our garage but we're not sure what is the best way to do so.  A friend recommended brick clips but I can't find them anywhere.  Do you drill a screw right into the brick or mortar?  I don't want to ruin anything.  TIA!

  • The front of our home is brick. When we moved in there were a few screws directly drilled into the brick (obviously for decorating reasons). They work great!

  • I'd go to Lowes or Home Depot and ask if they have any ideas of things to use that won't ruin my brick!
  • I called Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware and none of them carry the brick clips.  They don't really recommend putting a screw into the brick, but they don't carry brick clips either...sooo they didn't really help!  I'm thinking I'll just order the brick clips online.

  • H drilled holes with a masonry bit, stuck those plastic anchors in and then put screws in those.  They're called Molly bolts or something like that?  Or maybe those are different than what I'm thinking of.

  • You could drill into the morter not the brick.  cheaper to fix that than a brick later on.

Yes, now that I think about it, ours are drilled into the mortar rather than the brick.

  • I don't live in a brick home, BUT my husband is a mason.  He says to drill into the joint, NOT the brick.  If you chip the joint, you can just go buy some spec mix at Home Depot and fix the joint.  If you chip the brick, it's bigger pain. :)  He says that you can drill into the joint, and if you want, you could just use those plastic hole filler things for screws in dry wall (he said what they were called, but I forget--sorry!), OR you could go to Home Depot/Lowe's and get masonry screws. :)  I hope that helps.  Just remember, don't screw into the brick.
