Why do people take progesterone?

Just curious why I've seen so many women in progesterone. Why is it prescribed? I'm guessing it is a hormonal imbalance problem? Is it because of being on fertility treatments, or age, or health problems? My doctor has not mentioned it to me at all.

Re: Why do people take progesterone?

  • I have to take it due to a low progestrone level.  As soon as I found out I was pregnant both times the doctor had me start it...because it helps to hold my pregnancies. I have had previous m/c's, so the doctor did testing and low and behold my progestrone was too low.

  • Here is a good website that tells you all about progesterone. If you have a deficiency, it can effect a lot of things during pregnancy.

  • I had low progesterone as well.  It can cause miscarriages, so I'm on suppliments.  I'm not sure why some people have lower levels.  Just a hormone imbalance I guess.

  • I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), so I requested to have a progesterone test. PCOS is all about hormone imbalance... so I specifically asked them to test my hormones just in case.  If I do have low progesterone, it could potentially save my pregnancy to take supplements.

I find out tomorrow. Crossing fingers for normal progesterone!

  • I am on Progesterone in oil shots daily because I did IVF.  When the body does not naturally fertilize the egg, it doesn't start to produce Progesterone.  The shots are needed as support for the pregnancy.  Progesterone supports the lining and basically keeps the embryo in the uterus.  I was told I will stop at 10 weeks because the body will naturally produce enough by this time.
  • typically I have no progesterone problems at all ( no health problems, def. no fertility problems and I'm only 30). When I get pregnant instead of rising it stays the same or with my son, it took a nose dive.

Pretty much this. I have no problems when I'm not pregnant, I get pregnant easily, it's just my body doesn't produce enough of it to *possibly* support the pregnancy. Better safe than sorry method for me.

  • I had a loss in August, so my doc put me on it this time as a precaution.
