3rd Trimester

What is the point...

Long story short I'm having a c-section on Dec 9th(I'll be 37w5d) because I have insulin managed GD and LO has been breech for about 4 weeks now. Anyways my doctor gave me an internal today(I'm 1cm). That internal was REALLY painful. I was told I'll get one at each of my next two appointments before my c-section. I dont really understand why I'm even getting them.

  • you can refuse them! i dont see the point either, especially with a c-section!

  • I'm getting a c/s too since LO is breech. We did a dilation check when we did the GCS but I've opted out of the rest. You're right, there is no point.

  • Yea I don't see the point either!
  • They might just want to keep an eye on it, my doc would always check when I had complaints of contractions and I had a c-section scheduled until we found out she was small enough to try vaginally. She always said "We don't want you to accidently give birth vaginally"

If you don't have any progression or labor signs I don't see why you couldn't turn them down.

  • I dont want to refuse them if my dr has a reason for doing them so I suppose I'll ask when I see her next week.

They always ask me if I want them and I just say no.  Even though you're dilated it doesn't even mean anything. I had a friend who was about 1 cm at 34 weeks, 2 cm at 37, and had her baby at 40w4d.

  • Depending on what "type" of breech you are, there's a risk of the cord slipping out or into your cervix if you start to dilate- my OB said that if the baby is foot down (as opposed to butt down), then the feet can push the cord out, which could be dangerous. My guess is that's why you're still getting internals... our LO is breech, too, and she checks for dilation at every appt.
  • She's butt down with her feet up by her head. I only know that because I have to get a growth u/s every week.
