Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Moms of chunky babies

Regarding my DD, who is a chunky monkey...

Our last visit at 4 months, the pedi said they love big chunky babies, and there was nothing to worry about because she was weight/height proportionate (both in 95th percentile). She was 17 3/4 lbs and 25 3/4 inches at that time.

She has definitely continued to stretch out as well as fill out, and now at nearly 6 months she is nearly 28 inches long at my estimation, and 21 pounds! She's been a very healthy and happy baby, and is very strong - she sat up unassisted at 4 months and is now rolling all over the place. According to everything I've read she eat/drinks about in the middle of the ranges they give for her age. I know I shouldn't be worried but I can't help it when I hear about some one-year-olds that are 20 lbs!

I guess I"m just looking for some reassurance. Who else out there has wonderful chunky babies, and how much does your LO weigh? How much do they eat?

Thanks much!

  • DD was super chunky until 7 months, then she just stalled at 20 lbs and since then has only gained about a lbs but grew over 2". Once she started crawling is when the weight gain really slowed down. But I remember thinking the same thing you're thinking.

  • My DD was 19 lbs and 29 inches long. She is a very healthy happy baby. Trust me once she starts crawling she will slim down, our DD is getting longer right now, but has slowed down on weight gain a lot. Don't worry there are plenty of 6 month 20 lb babies out there!!!
  • Ds was 16lbs at 4 mo, almost 20 at 6 months and I'm guessing about 23lbs now.  He has always been a chunker but now seems to be slowing down a little since he is more mobile.  Everyone told me that would happen but I wondered about it too.

    Ditto.

pretty much stole the words right out of my mouth. I was worried as well b/c she was 18 lbs at 6 months, and my neice was 20 lbs at 1 yr!!

Like I said, she was 18 lbs and 26 and some odd inches, but was only 20 lbs at 9 months. I took her in for an ear infection at 10 months and she was still 20. She keeps getting longer and thinner. Once they start moving, it's very normal for them to stay at the same weight for months and months. Pedi told me she's seen babies hover at the same weight for like 6 months. No worries!!

Mom to 2 beautiful girls, 3 yrs and 22 months old. My 2nd was born at 32 weeks due to Rhogam failure/severe complications from Rh disease and is our miracle. She has bilateral auditory neuropathy and a cochlear implant, activated 4/5/2012 at 19 months. Lilypie First Birthday tickers

I don't understand why that is so shocking. DS is 22+ lbs at almost 7 months old. He is in the 90s percentiles for both height and weight. His pedi is very excited about his health - he started in the 5th percentiles. He's strong and healthy. Babies can be chunky and healthy and not be proportional as well since height often times takes longer to catch up - sometimes two years for them to even out.

Our kids are going to get enough about weight from society and the media. As parents we can set a good example of what they should eat (starting now) and what they view as a source of entertainment (video games or playing around outside). KWIM? Chill

  • DS doesn't look all that chucky, but he's just huge!  As a lady at Target today put it, "he's as big as my 2 year old!"  Gee, thanks lady.  Anyway, DS was always 95% for everything, but at 8 months he was 95% for height and 75% for weight.  So that worried me, combined with the fact that he doesn't eat much in the way of solids both because he won't let me feed him anyway and he isn't very good at feeding himself yet.  He's still BF.  Anyway, I guess my point is, that we all worry, all of the time!

My LO was 21 lbs last month and he eats BM four times a day plus most of the night long and gets 3 meals and snacks although he doesn't take much in.

  • At 4 months DS was 27inches long and 20lbs 12oz.  At 6 months he was 28.5 inchesa and 23lbs.  Yes he is huge and I am OK with that.  As long as his height and weight are both in the high 90% I don't see a problem.  He eats 4 or 5 6oz bottles a day.  He eats 3 meals, at breakfast he has 2 tablespoons of oatmeal at lunch he eats a half jar of veggie and fruit and dinner he eats half jar of veggie mixed with 1tablespoon of multigrain cereal and 1/2 jar of fruit.  I let him eat until he doesn't want anymore.

  • While we haven't gone to their 6 month appointment yet, we have been to the doctor and DS weighed 22 lbs and DD was 20 lbs. Wink You're not alone.

  • At 6 mo Abbers was 24 lbs and I don't remember the height, but for both she's off the charts.  She was 9-6 at birth, so she's always just been a big girl.  At 9 mo 1 week she was 28 lbs and still off the chart height & weight.  She's moving fast now and appears to be slimming, but she is still a big girl- thriving is my favorite term!

  • What a bunch of cuties - thanks ladies!
  • DS has his 9 month check up tomorrow and I'm dying to see what he weighs. At his 6 month-he was 23 lbs. The Dr is fine with it. It's hard for me to shop for him-he is wearing 18-24 months and they fit in the waist but are super long!! he is a chunky monkey!
