s/o Are you USING your degree?

I'm not.

My degree is in teaching, and I am not doing that anymore.

However, I wouldn't have the job I have now without my college degree if that makes sense.  It could be any B.S., or B.A, but I just have to have it.

Anyone else?

  • I did for 11 years.  Have no intention of going back to it at this point, even when I do go back to work.
  • Nope - I am a SAHM. I pretty much never "used" it even when I was working. It was a liberal arts college/degree.

Ha ha - as a funny aside, my older sister got her degree in "Children's Literature and Mythology". My dad was SOOOOO happy when I decided on my first major - Sociology  - just because there was an -ology at the end. I thank my sister for making sociology an acceptable major for my lawyer father Smile

  • I didn't answer the posts below, but I am using my Master's.

I have a Master's in Elementary Ed, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

My undergrad is MS Business Admin/Marketing, obviously not using that

  • No, I'm currently a SAHM.  Unless Jackson hopes I start teaching him the intricacies of the constitution, haha!

  • No.  :(  I'm an attorney.  After two years of not practicing and not knowing when or if I'll go back, I finally downgraded my bar membership from active to associate.

  • No.  I'm a SAHM.  But I never "used" my degree in Politics when I was working.  I was not a politician!  I did however NEED my degree to get the jobs I had after college.  But a BA in anything would have been fine, the major did not matter.
  • Not currently.  I did.  Then I got married and had babies and stayed home.  I'm a Child Life Specialist/Early Interventionist.  I hope to/plan to go back to it once my kids are in school.

  • Yes I am.  I studied social work and currently work for a social service agency.
  • Nope.  I have a BA in Sociology / Anthropology.  It's pretty much useless.

  • I am. I am a full-time attorney.

  • I'm not currently...but I did practice in Architecture before becoming a SAHM & I plan to open my own firm next year (just doing small projects out of my home so I will still be a SAHM).

  • I am now. I went to hair school and cut hair.  Worked through college for teaching.  Couldn't find a job so I went into social work for the State and got my LSW.  Left social work when a teaching position became available and have been teaching ever since.  I miss social work and hair though.  I'm one of those ppl who really would love to explore different professions all the time. I've been teaching for a long time.
  • My degree is in Early Childhood Development.  So even though I'm a SAHM you could say I use my degree every day.
  • Nope. However, I did achieve my goal of being a newspaper editor before we moved to a tiny town that didn't need an editor. I taught elementary school for 2 years before becoming a SAHM.

I never had any intention of using my political science bachelor's degree. I knew I was going to get a MA in journalism, so I got my BA in something that I loved and that interested me.

  • Nope. My degree is in English with a literature emphasis. I run my dad's office. He owns a masonry business. At some point, he's going to start training both DH (who is a mason) and I to take over for him.

I am considering going back and taking some basic business classes, though.

  • Nah, but I met my H because I used to work in my field. :)

ETA: I still work full time, but in a completely different field than I went to school for. I guess I use my BA in English quite a bit just for communication/writing purposes, but it's not necessary since my job is to write HTML (no grammar knowledge needed there!).

When I went to get my MA in art history I originally intended to get my PhD and become a college professor. Seeing what my DH has to go through every year to find any kind of decent job, I'm SOOOOO glad I decided to abort after I got my MA. I definitely don't have the stamina to churn out all those applications and deal with so much rejection.

  • Barely.  I am a dental hygienist, but only work a few days a month.  Once my kids are older, I plan to work a little more, but probably still be part time.

  • Nope, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I got a degree in Psych w/ a minor in Women's Studies...completely useless.
  • yes.  I am a p/t academic and a p/t SAHmom :)
  • Yes. I have my MBA and currently work in Corp Finance for a major insurane company.
  • yes, I'm a CPA and work in accounting
  • I did until becoming a SAHM.  Ironically, using my degree for a job I loved wasn't enough since I earned less than what daycare for one would cost in my area, so it didn't help me financially at all, although I absolutely loved what I did.

  • not really. i have a pr degree and work in customer service. such a waste of 20k.

  • Not at all.  I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering.  I'm a photographer (mostly weddings) with my own business.
  • I work PT in market research/polling, but not political polling (although my boss/friend used to work for President Clinton's pollster - she HATED the political work).

So, my BA in Politics and MPP in Public Policy basically are not being utilized right now.  I was working "in the field" when I worked in government relations and education organizations, but I got screwed in the non-proft world, so I now I happily put together PowerPoints for huge money corporate clients while staying home with DD 5 out of 7 days a week.

Maybe one day I will get back to it....but we're leaving the DC area, so I might go in a completely different direction when the PT gig ends (if it does).

  • Yes, I'm a scientist.
  • My job requires my degree however I think anyone with half a brain and compassion could do my job (social work).

  • I have a BA in English.  I then got my elementary ed certification and a M.ED and ED.S.  I am using those degrees.  I have taught school for 10 years.  9 years in 1st and currently a Kindergarten teacher.
