oh crap... mastitis?

I've had a weird headachc/neck ache all day and have just felt blah. I just realized my right breast is sore and has a big lump in it. It feels hot, too. It probably would hurt more, but I have nerve damage so I can't really tell (it was a benefit in the early days of breastfeeding, lol)  I'm running a bit of a fever.

tell me it's not mastitis... or if it is, tell me how to get rid of it quickly.

Re: oh crap... mastitis?

  • sounds like mastitis, sorry. I had it twice. The first thing you need to do is clear your clogged duct asap. Nurse, pump, use warm compresses, have DH help you massage the clogged duct, do whatever you need to do to get the milk out of there.

You may or may not need antibiotics depending on what your OB/midwife says, so make sure you call first thing in the morning. Kellymom has some helpful info on home treatment that I followed the 2nd time I had mastitis. One of the reco's was to eat lots of garlic and I found that very helpful. But maybe I just had a lesser case the second time around, or I caught it very quickly since I knew exactly what it was.

  • Sorry.  Sounds like mastitis for sure. Sad

Clove essential oil can help but you really need to pump, had express, use warm water soaks/compresses and watch yourself closely.   I would also take some Tylenol or Ibeprofen. :(

  • take a really hot bath and massage and express your milk while in the bath.  I have had my share of this.  I got clogged ducts every month on the dot. Always the same spot too--It was miserable.  Then pump pump pump or nurse nurse nurse!!  I also used those disposable heating pads too.  They were great.  I hope you feel better soon.

  • I had it when DS was about 6-7 weeks old. I called the OB & they called in antibiotics right away - mine went from "hmm, by boob is slightly red" to "holy crap, I can't move I'm so sick" within 2 hours.

I kept getting  clogged ducts all the time too. I finally bought some supportive nursing bras & the problem was solved.

Oh, & I've heard some ppl get a little supply drop for a few days. Didn't happen to me, so I'm not sure if that's true, but don't freak if it does.

  • I'm doing hands on pumping every 30 minutes and I dug out some of the disposable diapers we never used and filled them with hot water to sit on my boobs. I'd already taken tylenol for the headache... of course this is the one stretch of day when I know Em will sleep, so I can't nurse!

My OB isn't in the office on Fridays... can a LC who is also a nurse write a prescription for me?

I think I have multiple plugged ducts.. my boobs both feel all lumpy. Ouch.

Take Ibuprofen instead of tylenol. It's more helpful in fighting the inflammation.

I think only nurse practitioners can write prescriptions. Does your OB have an emergency line? Or maybe your GP?

Massage & compress those lumpy areas when you pump too.

Ugh. I hope you get to feeling better.
