Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby Clothes-Question from 3rd Tri

I am so confused about baby clothes.

On Kohl's website I found the following suggestion for what to purchase

Gowns 4 to 6
Bodysuits 9 to 12
Sleepers 4 to 6
Side Snap Shirts 4 to 6

Would you recommend buying the following list for both 0-3 & 3-6 months. Also is there a size smaller than 0-3 that my son will need first?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Baby Clothes-Question from 3rd Tri

  • That seems like a lot of gowns.  I would say more like 1-2.  Also, we only used 1 side-snapped shirt one time.  I hate how it rode up and exposed his belly.

As far as newborn size, it will just depend on how big LO is at birth.  I bought a few things from Carters (no time limit on return policy) and left the tags on until after he was born.

  • It really depends on preference.  We almost always have DS in a sleeper, so for us I'd want about 10-12 of those and I'd skip the rest

ETA: There is a newborn size that is smaller than 0-3.  My son is still in newborn size, but he was less than 6 lbs at birth

  • Yes, there is a size smaller.  It's newborn.  you may want to get some newborns just in case.  DD was in NB's for about a month and she weighed in at 7 lbs 3 oz.

  • Seriously, try to keep in mind that Kohl's wants you to BUY stuff from them, so they are over estimating.  The first two weeks I think he would wear the same sleeper for DAYS!!!  I like the gowns for the first two or three weeks since their legs are all squinchy, and then footed sleepers after that (preferably zippered).  The 0-3 stuff is going to be huge, but don't over buy on newborn stuff because they wear it for such a short period of time.  I would plan on 6-8 onsies if you plan for Lo towear them underneath stuff, plus three to four gowns in newborn size in the begininning, and then transition to 6-8 footed sleepers.  Skip the side snap shirts.
  • I would suggest more sleepers. We have 12 in each size.
  • depends on how much you want to do laundry.

DD wore gowns at first when she didn't wiggle her feet out of them.

newborn is smaller.  DD was in newborn stuff (except for gerber brand, because they run reeaaalllyy small) until about 1 month.  she was 7lbs, 8oz. at birth.

also, i hate the side snap shirts.  you will forever be pulling them down over their belly.

when she outgrew the gowns and started moving a lot, we went to sleep sacks with a onesie underneath, because sleepers with 60bajillion snaps and sleep deprivation are not a good mix.

  • My LO is still in newborn size. He was 7lbs 8 oz at birth. He pretty much lives in Gerber sleepers with zippers.  I love those things. He sometimes wears a few of the newborn onesies we have, but only when the sleepers are dirty.

    Thanks for your help!

My DS was 10lbs 3oz and 22.5in long so newborn didn't fit at all. He didn't even fit in his "take me home" outfit. DH had to run home and bring something else to the hospital. My biggest mistake was washing everything before I delivered. I would wash only enough to get you through the first couple of days. Keep the tags on the rest 'cause you never know.

Snap shirts are the worst thing ever, don't bother.

Onsies/body suits I would say 12-14 (I put them under everything)

    Sleepers I would say 6-7

Gowns are great for middle of the night diaper changes. We have 7.

I went by the fact that if worse came to worse, I wouldn't have to do laundry for a week.

  • DS is still in NB size sleepers and he was 7lbs 13oz at birth.  The 3 month size ones are way too big.

We went through probably 4-5 changes of clothes per day for about a week because the NB diapers leaked.  We couldn't figure out why they were leaking, but when we moved to size 1 it stopped.  Now he goes in a sleeper/gown at night and then when he gets up after his morning nap we change him into his clothes/sleeper for the day and then back to the same sleeper/gown at night.

I would probably have 2-3 gowns and 10 sleepers - just so if you don't get around to doing laundry you have a few extra.

  • Sounds about right to me, except I didn't have any side snap shirts and managed to survive.  If you are having your baby this winter, which I assume you are, you probably don't need many, if any, gowns.  They don't keep baby's legs warm.  Getting newborn size just depends on how big your baby is.  My baby was born at 7 lbs 9 oz and he wore the NB size for about 8 weeks.  I think that's pretty typical.
  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies it really helps!
  • I was just at kohls today, the smallest size, as long as u dont have a premie is NB or newborn. 0-3 months is the next size and it swamps my lil guy, but he's only about 6lbs. I would say NB is for about 6lbs up to about 7.5lbs. as for the sizes u show up there, thats not how they run in the store at all
