Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did you/will you move car seat to forward facing?

The manufacturer says 1 year and 20 pounds, but curious to see if people usually move them after this guideline. DD hates being back there, its a battle every time to keep her entertained and lately tantrums are a normal practice. Wondering if I moved it to forward facing, if it would help...

  • Do not let people on a message board make your decision for you.  Do what is best for your daughter and your family.

HAHA, isnt this what 99% of people do on these message boards, get opinions? I am not asking people who to raise my child, just curious if its typical to switch your child to forward facing after a year and 20 pounds.

  • Get your hard hat on.

We turned dd1 ff when she was about 14 months.

100% agree!  Do your own research and do what is best for your family.

  • Wow! sorry I asked. Didnt realize this was such a controversial topic. No, I am not going to do it today or tomorrow. Just getting opinions!!

  • It's a huge debate on this board.  Many say FF at a year, many say RF until 2 years.  It's just a decision that you need to make for yourself, don't let anyone influence you one way or the other.
  • Sam is still rear facing at 27 lbs and 15 1/2 months.  I keep him rear facing because so far he is tolerating it.  However, if it was a  battle every time we got in the car and forward facing would help, I would turn him around as long as he met the weight/age requirements.

There are pros/cons to each side.  For us, I'm choosing to keep Sam rear facing as long as possible.  But again, he enjoys being rear facing.

  • I'll actually answer your question. ?We won't be moving DS until he's 2, unless circumstances force us to do otherwise (motion sickness, major temper tantrums, etc.) ?I feel that's the safest choice and the AAP agrees.

  • I'm not going to lie, a youtube video helped us make our decision.  We did, of course, read lots of articles and talked as a family.

I think it's something that is important to be informed about.  And I think it is a personal decision and everyone makes different decisions for their families.

Extended rear facing is the right decision for our family.

I also wanted to note that 1 year and 20 lbs is what the law says is the soonest.  Most manufacturers of convertibles have a much higher weight that they can rear face.

    HTH!

Like this kind poster, I will simply answer your question.  We are rearfacing until 2 in my car and DS was turned ff in DH"s car at 18 months.  Our cheaper seat (in DH's car) fits better forward so we turned it earlier.

  • I'll answer because i really don't care what anyone else thinks/says about my parenting choices.  I switched DS when he was 10 months old, he was well over 20 pds and screamed his head off RF and it was driving me crazy, i felt trapped in my house, so we switched him.  Here's a pic of the day we did it, life was SOOO much easier.

  • Our carseat says the maximum weight is 35lbs. We will be transferring within the military next June and she will be facing backward. I don't want to drive across the country and have to face different state laws, so once we are moved, we will decide whether we will turn her around or not. DH and I have pretty much decided to keep DD facing backward until she is 35 lbs.

  • DS will be 2 next month and he is still RF. However, he is very small (22 lbs.) and he is still very happy RF. I will discuss it with my pedi at DS' 2 year checkup.
  • Your DD is such a cutie! Yes, this is a huge debate around these parts. My DD is still RF. She's about 25 lbs and 18 months. I'll probably turn her around 2.

But, to answer your question: DD was 20 lbs, so we turned her around on her 1st birthday.

Wow.  I don't have a problem with people making their own parenting decisions...but turning him before 1 year?  That's the law, and his safety.  Obviously you're entitled to do what you want, but I totally disagree with this.

Hmm and Confused to those going, "We are keeping them till they are 2 because it is SAFER AND BETTER".  Way to pass judgment.

I understand and i felt really sick over it.  I am seriously grateful that nothing adverse happened, but the difference in ike was night and day; i just couldn't take the screaming anymore.

  • At 18mos, my DD was just 22lbs (the recommedation of my seat). I haven't flipped her yet, trying to hold out until Spring as I figure I'm more apt to have an accident in the snow. We may end up doing it sooner than that though, she hates being RF and begs to ride in DH's SUV (our secondary seat is only a FF one).

It's not the law in Texas, so she didn't break any laws.  It's still unbelievably irresponsible, IMO.

But it IS safer; you can't argue otherwise.  And safer is better.

Ditto this.  Here's also a video about extended rear facing... it is super dramatic and I don't judge those who do FF before 2 years.  And like PP said, if DS had major tantrums, threw up, etc.... I'd move him to FF before 2 years.

Also, if you do decide to do extended rearfacing you need to get a carseat that supports long enough for 2 years.  Ours will support him up to 35lbs.

I'm certainly not proud of it, i'm happy it ended up working out for us and i don't regret my decision, but i do believe the law in TX is 20 pds AND a year, if so yes i broke the law.

Actually, RF until 1 year IS Texas state law.

  • We turned her to FF at 1 year.  DD has always hated her car seat and we dreaded taking her anywhere if it was more than a 10-15min. drive.  It was awful!  So we turned her around at 1 year and she's been happy!  No screaming fits so far.

No worries, it's why i avoided these posts like the plague, i know that i am most definitely in the minority with this decision.
