Interesting Insurance Quandry

My EDD is July 1 and this is my first.  So imagine how tickled I was when I read through our insurance info and discovered our calendar year is from July 1-June 30th.  This means if I go to my due date I will be in a new year with a whole new deductible, and nothing towards my maximum out of pocket.  As it is right now I have alright met my deductible this year (I fell down a flight of steps, dislocated my shoulder and had kidney stones this year) and I am about $1500 into my $3000 max out of pocket.

SOOOOO... I am thinking I should discuss with my Dr. to see if I go to 38-39 weeks if they will induce so that I can get everything covered on this year instead of starting from scratch...

Or should I just suck it up and say "eh, there goes ANOTHER extra thousand or so?"

Anyone have any thoughts on having baby early for insurance purposes?  Or do I some like crazy lady?

Re: Interesting Insurance Quandry

  • You should call your insurance company and find out what their policy is.

Our policy is calendar year.  Both of my pgs have carried from one into the other, and they were treated as one calendar year.  I didn't have to meet any deductibles when DD was born, or pay co-pays, since it was part of on-going care that had started in the previous year.

  • You sound slightly crazy for wantiing to induce early, but you may be ok on part of this one.  Many hospitals make you pay before you have the baby.  If so, you may be alright as far as the hospital stay goes, but that may or may not include anesthesia, unexpected things, etc.  What's your deductible?  That's the main expense other then your % that you're going to have to cover.
  • I would not even think twice about this. Why would you risk your babies health for a thousand dollars? To me it's a no brainer. Please don't take that as rude but I just don't see why you would consider it. GL

  • If your doctor will do it [most won't induce early w/o a medical reason] then do it.

In most circumstances a week isn't going to be a big deal.

  • I can understand the money issues, but inducing early for it does seem a little far out IMO.

As pp's mentioned, billing with a pg can be a little wonky, anyway.  With DD the bill for my obgyn went in to the insurance company as a single mass amount at the time of the last visit, which was actually several weeks post-partum.  Lab bills went in at the time they were run, as did the hospital bill itself.

    This.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • My thought is that with post-delivery care for you and appointments for the little one, etc.  you'll most likely be meeting the deductible next year anyway, whether labor and delivery go on this year's or next.  So in my mind, it's six of one and hafl-dozen of the other...

I personally wouldn't induce over it...  Just my opinion...  Good luck!

  • I would talk to your dr about it.  I have know several friends that induced for other reason - usually a week or so before there due date.  So just ask and see what he or she thinks.

Funny side note - My mom was induced in 1954, so that the dr and my grandfather could go fox hunting over the Christmas holiday.  Now alot has changed in 55 years, but it made me think about it.
