Tantrums are becoming a safety issue! WWYD??

DS has been throwing the most insane temper tantrums lately. He hits, kicks, pulls hair, throws himself on the ground and pounds his head on the floor. Yesterday he actually ripped his diaper off and threw it at me. I can't hold onto him when he's freaking out, but when I put him down, he flails around and continually pounds his head on the wood floor or tile. WWYD to keep him from hurting himself?

  • Maybe put him in an empty pack n play or crib?

  • meh. ..  unless you think he'll crack his head open or something; I'd let him go ahead and bang his head on the wood or tile once - I'll bet that won't happen again.

This.  Walk away and ignore it.  He knows that he is getting you concerned with all that thrashing and it's reinforcing his behavior.

If his tantrums do become a safety issue, then I agree with the PP about a pack and play.

  • I read in one of my books that head banging is normal and to let them do it. They'll soon learn that it hurts and stop. (Obviously, if they do it until their head bleeds, call the doctor, because that is a problem!) Our DS tends to throw things when he's really mad or having a tantrum. We have a time out area set up with a small portion of our play yard (baby jail) in a hallway. He goes in there if he's that upset. Keeps him from hurting himself and others and acts as a time out. You could also try a PnP or crib.
  • He has totally got you. He knows that if he does things you "think" will hurt him you will give him attention and make him stop. Ignore it, he will stop banging his head if it hurts enough.
  • Yep, they are all right. He is totally playing you. My son does not go that far and has never thrown a "true" tantrum, but he certainly plays me and acts COMPLETELY different with my husband!!!! It pisses me off to no end but I have a hard time changing my own behavior to stop it...even though DH tells me I need to just leave him be. I would take the PP's advice.

  • I've tried ignoring him, but I end up giving in when he starts the head bashing. I suppose I'll have to last a little longer. I swear my neighbors are going to call CPS on me. One of them told me they can hear him screaming from the street. How embarrassing!!
