I was just reading the eligibility terms on the ca EDD site and it says employees are eligible for 6 weeks paid SDI to bond with new baby. It doesn't say that it's just for moms though. Curious is anyone knows more about this. I'm primarily self-employed and my benefits would be much less $ than DH's would be. If he qualifies I think we're better off having him apply for his claim. If it's an either/or thing. It's confusing trying to figureout how it all works and how to apply for it. Have any advise?
siggy should be here!
Re: Does DH qualify for paid FMLA?
i think as long as you pay into SDI, you can take PFL regardless of whether you're the mom or dad but you can't take it concurrently.
dh wasn't eligible for it since he's self employed and doesn't pay into SDI.
You can take it concurrently. As long as you pay into SDI, both parents are eligible for the Paid Family Leave (6 weeks) bonding time paid by the state. However, your employer is not required to give you that time off, so if your DH isn't covered by FMLA, it's hard to get your employer to give you 6 weeks off.
It can be taken in chunks anytime within the first year of birth or date of adoption. Many people take a couple weeks in the beginning more later, etc.
