NTR: How many lbs of potatoes....

Thanksgiving dinner for 8 adults, 5 school-aged kids, & 3 toddlers.

How many lbs of potatoes for mashed potatoes?  I'm thinkin a 5 lb bag - cook all of them?  Or will that not be enough?  Should I get the 10 lb bag and just do 3/4 of them?

    Hmm.  I would buy a 10 pound bag for sure, and do at least 3/4 of them, if not all of them.  I guess it also depends on the number additional sides you are having.

    I'm having the same amount of people and am making 10lbs and knowing my family, there probably won't be any leftovers.

    ditto making 10 lbs. I usually figure 2 potatoes person.

    ETA: Of course, it depends on the size also.

    Rule of thumb: 1 potato per person.  I have no idea how many are in a 5 lb bag, but I'd probably get 14 potatoes or so.  The toddlers aren't going to eat very much and this way you'll have plenty.

    I was going to say this as well.  1 potato per person (average sized baker) or several for smaller (red, etc.) potatoes.  Of course, leftovers are also awesome, so oops! make some extra!
