Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

NTR: How many lbs of potatoes....

Thanksgiving dinner for 8 adults, 5 school-aged kids, & 3 toddlers.

How many lbs of potatoes for mashed potatoes?  I'm thinkin a 5 lb bag - cook all of them?  Or will that not be enough?  Should I get the 10 lb bag and just do 3/4 of them?

Re: NTR: How many lbs of potatoes....

  • Hmm.  I would buy a 10 pound bag for sure, and do at least 3/4 of them, if not all of them.  I guess it also depends on the number additional sides you are having.

  • I'm having the same amount of people and am making 10lbs and knowing my family, there probably won't be any leftovers.

  • ditto making 10 lbs. I usually figure 2 potatoes person.

ETA: Of course, it depends on the size also.

  • Rule of thumb: 1 potato per person.  I have no idea how many are in a 5 lb bag, but I'd probably get 14 potatoes or so.  The toddlers aren't going to eat very much and this way you'll have plenty.

I was going to say this as well.  1 potato per person (average sized baker) or several for smaller (red, etc.) potatoes.  Of course, leftovers are also awesome, so oops! make some extra!
