Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

infant motrin dosage question

The dosage is 1.875 mL for up to 23 lbs. and 23 months. Is this the dosage you all use, even if you child is over 23 lbs.?

Re: infant motrin dosage question

  • We give DD 1.875 now that she's 25 lbs
  • Loading the player...
  • I don't know the mL.  I think I give 1 tsp / 6 hours.  Lucas is 19 months, 27ish lbs.

I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean that you still give it at 25 lbs., or that you just NOW give that much at 25 lbs? The dosage on the infant motrin says 1.875 for 18-23 lbs. and 12-23 months old.

  • I think if your LO is ove 23 lbs, you should be usng children's motrin, not infant motrin.

  • When in doubt, dose by weight.  The age is a general guideline.

That's 2.5 mL, which is the next dosage up. The bottle says that is for 2-3 yrs. old, but 24-35 lbs., which is the source of my confusion. I mean, are most 19 month olds still less than 23 lbs??? Weird.

    agreed.

we do children's motrin and do 2.5ml for sawyer (21lbs) and 5ml for aidan (30lbs). (iirc)

Ahhhh HA. Okay then! Maybe the motrin is wearing off DD so quick because it just isn't enough for her (I've still been using 1.875 of the infants). Thanks!

no way. do that poll. id say youll find the exact opposite. that you (and i) are in the minority.

    sigh.

children's is less concentrated. so 1.875 of the children's is going to be LESS than 1.875 of the infants.

  • We were at the children's hospital this weekend and the pediatric ER staff told us to give our 30 lb DD 6 ML of the CHILDREN'S MOTRIN/TYLENOL (not the Infant). Seemed like a lot when they initially gave it to her, so I questioned it and they said based on her weight, that's what she should have. They go by weight and not age.
  • Nurse told me to use children's motrin if he's over 23lbs.
  • I have been wondering this myself!  My ds is 26lbs!  I can't see a child only being 23lbs by 2 years of age!!  And damn I just bought a new big bottle of the infants.

THIS!  we give our LO Children's Motrin and she is over 24 lbs.  our pedi said to.

  • My DS is only 21.5 pounds, but I still use Children's Motrin.  I work at a pharmacy, and I always ask one of the pharmacists when it comes to dosage.  She told me to use children's because I'm using so much by now that it'll cost less to get a big bottle of children's.

I didn't mean that I'd still give her 1.875 of the children's. I was implying a whole different and hopefully more appropriate dose using the children's (like you said you give your younger DD 2.5 mL, right?). And in the other post, I WAS saying that most 19 month olds are probably over 23 lbs. You either mis-read or missed my sarcasm.

  • Thanks so much for all the helpful replies!

well yes, but the 2.5ml of children's doesn't even = 1.875 of infants probably. i dont have infants on had to do the math.

my point was that moving up to the "proper dosage" (bc it starts at 24lbs = 5ml) seems like a ton for a baby when the "age" is 2-3 years old.

  • I'm so confused.  Why can I not use infant motrin?  I like the concentrated stuff better b/c can quickly shove it down her.  That's the only difference, correct?  Educate me.

yeah. and its more expensive. so some people use childrens from day 1 and just do the math on it.

shoving it down her is the reason we only do 2.5 or so for dd2. i dont want to fill up 2 droppers and she isn't old enough to "take a shot" by herself with the cups.

well, the children's is going to be much less expensive... even though the infants is more concentrated, overall there is more doses in the children's and it's less expensive.

Anyway, to OP, DD's pedi told us to switch to children's at her 15 mo. visit (I think it was). She was right around the 23lb mark and he said it was fine.

  • yeah, i know children's is cheaper, but much like many things in my life, convenience comes before frugality.
