Christmas cards?

What kind of Christmas cards are you guys sending out this year? Every year I like to do something unique (I was a Graphic Designer for over 10 years before being a SAHM, so my family always expects something unique each year). Anyway, last year I had custom bookmarks made. They had photos of the boys on the front and on the back it had Q&A's.... I asked the boys some Xmas questions and I put down their cute answers. Like "What does Santa do in the summer?" and "How does Santa get into the houses that don't have chimneys?". Everyone loved their creative, innocent (funny) replies. Everyone we know still uses those bookmarks and still talks about how cute and useful they are. The year before that I took a photo of my two older boys sitting in front of the Xmas tree with a big present between them... the photo shows my oldest holding the lid of the wrapped present like he just opened it and sitting inside was our newest addition (our 3rd son just turned 6 mo old and we set him in the box) and the two older boys had looks of shock/excitement on their faces. The caption read "It's just what we always wanted!" The year before that we went less Christmas-y and had photos of me, dh and my two oldest boys (I was pg with #3) all in the woods sitting on logs with the fall leaves all around us. It was really pretty.

So........... any creative ideas you'd like to share??? The only thing I can come up with is a "realistic look at what it's like to take a perfect family photo". I was thinking of having an awesome family photo on the front of the card that will make our family say "aah, isn't that sweet!" and then on the inside I will put a handful of hilarious 'reject' photos. You know, all those photos you delete before you get to the one that you are willing to put on your Christmas card. The ones with the kids looking the wrong way, kids making faces, wierd looks on our faces, everyone getting stressed out, the dog walking by, the boys fighting.... Our family will laugh hysterically when they see the 'real us' on the inside photos. Sometimes the reject photos are the ones that truly capture a memory. Of course I wont tell dh and the kids what my plan is (I want to catch real out-takes).

Anyone else have any ideas? I'm still up in the air about our cards this year. That was just one idea I had.

Bookmark - I also had the kids sign their own names... even the scribble of my then 1 year old. I had the bookmarks printed online at Millers Lab.

  • I have no great ideas, but I just wanted to say your ideas are awesome and super cute!  Good for you, I usually stick with the picture of my DD on a card- have it printed out at Walgreens and stick a stamp on it.  I should probably take more time to do something fun like you! Smile
  • Wow, I am so not creative! I just do a shutterfly photo card. We have a photographer friend who takes our picture for us.
  • Ours is in my sig.  Last year, we did a pic of DD baking Christmas cookies, with the line, "Sending you a batch of holiday joy!"
  • I?m not creative at all, I love your ideas !!

  • I usually design my own as well, but this year I took the easy way out and just used a template, mainly because Fuji's SeeHere has a promo going on for 50 free photo cards so I took advantage of it.

I like the idea of the different seasons - it covers the whole year. Cute!

  • Oh my gosh I love your ideas.  I might just have to steal some of them!  I recently got PSE7 and was going to create our card but wasn't planning on doing anything too creative.  I was thinking of doing a picture of DS inside a box with a santa hat on.  Or surrounded with Christmas lights.  I really like the one of the "fail" pictures on the inside.

  • I just looked up Millers Lab and you have to be a professional photographer to order from there :(

  • Oh my gosh, your ideas are so creative and cute!!!

We also take a family photo with the Golden Gate bridge or some local favorite in the background and upload it to https://www.tinyprints.com where I can customize our cards.

I get matching envelopes from Paper Source in Berkeley and find some cute labels and matching stickers just so they look extra cute.   :)

Good luck, I'm sure they'll turn out precious!

Call yourself eris1995 Photography and ta-da... you're a professional! :) I am a semi-professional photographer, but you don't really have to be to order from Millers. I don't have my own studio or anything. I have a small side business that I call Early Years Photography, but I wouldn't call myself a "professional". Just give yourself a business name and that's pretty much all you need. There may be other places online too that do bookmarks.
