If you have more than one child

AND Christmas gifts are something that you buy for them...do you try to keep things even? If one child asks for more expensive gifts, do you try to spend the same amount on both? Or just have same number of gifts? Or do you not worry about it? This is my first year with two kids and I am trying to decide how to handle fairness...

Re: If you have more than one child

  • Yes, I always aim to spend the same amount on the 3 older kids, give or take.  Our 1 year old is getting the short end of the stick this year since he won't know any better!

We will when they're older and can notice those things.

This. My boys are 3.5 years and 9 months, so the 9 month old isn't going to notice yet! lol

I'm not going to be as neurotic about keeping things even as my MIL is though. She will not spend ONE penny more on one grandkid or another.

  • We spend the same on each kid (within 10 dollars) and have the same number of gifts for each kid.  I try to have similarish gifts too -- like they'll all get an outfit, a book, a toy, a game, and art supplies but the gifts will be suited to their ages and preferences.

  • My son is 4 and my daughter is only 2 so this year I got more things for my son.  He is more into it and I remember last year my son got tired after awhile of opening so many gifts.  So this year I got them each a certain amount of gifts but my son is getting probably about 5 more than she is.  Plus a lot of the things they will play with together (like the Zhu Zhu pets).  As they get older I think I will try to get them an even amount of gifts, if possible.
  • When they are young and don't understand the value of different items, I will just try to keep the number of items similar. Once they are older, I'll make sure the $ value is pretty close.
