Has anyone's son had an inguinal hernia?

We are meeting with a pediatric surgeon in 2 weeks for a consult on this, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it.

It seems pretty minor in talking to our ped and reading online, but when it is your baby is surgery ever really minor?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experience!

Re: Has anyone's son had an inguinal hernia?

  • My 5 y/o had an inguinal hernia/hydrocele repair right after he turned 4, so he was quite a bit older which probably affects things greatly. For him it was outpatient, he went home about 2 hrs after. He was sore and slept quite a bit for a day or so, then he was fine. It's always scary to have your child put under for any reason.

  • Robbie had bilateral inguinal hernias repaired before he came home from the NICU. He also had a bunch of other stuff done at the same time (hiatal hernia, G tube, fundoplication) and he was under 4lb at the time, so it's hard to compare the two.

He had some trouble coming out of anesthesia (took him 3 days to wake up) but he's been deemed a "slow metabolizer" and again, he was VERY small and had a LOT done.

The hernia repairs themselves.. he was very sore and defensive of the area, and his scrotum turned black. they kept checking it for necrosis because it looked pretty ugly. But the soreness only seemed to last a day or two. The bruising took a long time to go away, but it just looked bad, it didn't bother him.

  • my son had his repaired and it went great.  he was 6 months when it was done.  he also had his testicles brought down. we were lucky that they sent us home the same day.  he was hopped up on oxycodone for a while but bounced back quickly.  the dr said "that was one big ass hernia" lol
  • DS had a hydrocele and a small inguinal hernia.  One weekend his left testicle looked larger, swollen, and a little discolored.  He was 3.5 at the time.  He had no trouble w/surg and was discharged about an hour after.  The one problem was coming out of anethesia.  He was a totally inconsolable mess!  That's why they kicked us out so fast, but once we were walking out (I carried him) he was fine.  :)  He didn't need anything for pain other than regular tylenol/ibprofen.  He could bathe, but couldn't sit in the water for a week so we did showers during that time.  His stitches absorbed and the steri strips fell off on their own.  Thankfully, the dr was able to work around his reproductive parts so he shouldn't have a problem in the future.  GL!
