milk dried up already?

Is it possible for some women to only produce a small amount of milk and then dry up quickly?  Even after my milk came in, my breasts have never felt engorged and my milk has never "let down"... I have to force it out through pumping and I only get about 2 - 2.5 ounces total from both breasts every 2 hours.  Yesterday, I only for 1 ounce out of both breasts, so I defintley had to give DS formula afterwards.  I guess I expected breastfeeding to come naturally, but it has been nothing but "natural" for me.  Just wonderding if anyone else had this problem.

  • I have never felt engorged, not everyone does.  I have never leaked, never felt a letdown except when pumping and I almost exclusively BF my LO.  I supplemented at first because I felt like I didn't have enough (which is easy to feel). 2-2.5 oz every 2 hours at 2 weeks seems pretty good to me.  Your LO will always get more than a pump ever will, plus babies tend to drink more out of a bottle than at the breast.

I would see a LC to see if you really do have a supply issue. You may not.

  • I've had the same problem. I wasn't sure if it was because my baby was born 7 weeks early or not, but I drink a ton of water and pump every 2-3 hours and I only get about 1oz or 2 oz and it totally sucks. I also feed LO formula too. So I feel your pain. Don't beat yourself up though, the LC that I spoke too said whatever BM you can feed LO is better then nothing at all.

    Good luck!

This is what I was going to say. 2.5 oz sounds exactly right to me. On average, a pump will get 1oz less then your LO could. And at 2 weeks, LO is probably only eating about 2.5 or so oz per feeding anyway.

Also, it is common to not feel letdown at first. I didn't start feeling it until just this week, so 3 weeks. And some people are lucky enough to never get engorged ;)
