Minnesota Babies

Minneapolis Neighborhoods

Hi,

I haven't posted on this board before so here's a quick bit about me:

DH and I are in our 20s, have a little girl (5 months), and 2 dogs

we are currently renting an apt we hate, haven't had luck finding a new one, our lease expires in May

we really want to buy a house, but we aren't having much luck looking, I think it's because we are looking at the wrong areas?

Any recommendations on good, safe, middle class neighborhoods for families in Minneapolis?

TIA

Re: Minneapolis Neighborhoods

  • We live in the Shingle Creek neighborhood of N Mpls and LOVE it! Very quiet, near parks and trails, and diverse, friendly neighborhood! PM me if you'd like to chat more about it!

  • We live in Powderhorn, which is kind of hit or miss, but right south of us is Longfellow and Nokomis neighborhoods - both great areas, right by the lake, and more affordable than the Southwest area.  If I could do it over again after living here awhile, that's where I'd go.

We live in a "miss" area of Powderhorn now and I've been looking in Nokomis but haven't been able to find anything affordable. I guess it's just time for more hard working looking.
  • I know Northeast also has some great neighborhoods, I'm not as familiar with them, but I have a friend who just bought over there and it was pretty reasonable.

  • We live in NE Minneapolis. As long as you stay north of Lowry (my opinion anyway), you are in a very safe, middle class family type of neighborhood. I would also stay between Central Ave and Stinson Ave, don't go west of Central Ave. We've been here for 8 years now and love it!

  • We're in NE and LOVE it.  I agree that the closer you get to Lowry & Central, the worse (in very general terms).  Closer to downtown (south) and closer to Saint Anthony township (north) are better.  There are some very reasonable homes on the market right now in great neighborhoods.  Our block still has 4 orginal owners of the homes (lived there 40 years) as well as great young professionals and families.  .
  • We are in Longfellow and love it, we are a few blocks from Lake Street and a few blocks from the River Road.  There are resturants, playgrounds, coffee shops and it is safe.  Lots of familes around too.
  • Just wanted to give another vote for NE. We live near 32nd and Johnson (been on this side of NE for 6 years). Some original owners, very quiet (sometimes too quiet), and lots of young couples and families. There are tons of houses for sale for what I bought mine for at the height of the market (so it is very reasonable). Once you live here it is tough to consider moving elsewhere as the location is ideal...very close to rosedale and close to downtown.
  • Standish Ericsson.....technically it's a combo of Powderhorn and Nokomis neighborhoods....not to far off cedar, close to the golf course, near bus lines.  Fit our price range, great neighbors, decent area.
