follow up to low platelet issue

Hi ladies! Thanks again for all your encouraging words yesterday. Luckily, I was getting myself worked up over nothing. The OB was very reassuring today. My platelets are at 117,000, which is lower than normal, but all it signifies is "mild gestational thrombocytopenia." They are sending me to the hematology/oncology consult as a precaution, just to be 100% sure that there are no other more serious underlying issues, but the OB was pretty confident that this is just something that is going to go away after delivery. My hemoglobin went up a little bit, so now they're on the "low" end of normal (as opposed to below normal). They are having me take iron supplements to see if they continue to rise. My blood pressure is perfect, as it has been the entire pregnancy, so I am not at risk for HELLP or pre-e.

Anyway, the doctor told me that what matters is what these levels (esp. the platelets) are on the day of delivery. They may fluctuate back and forth from now till then. If they go way lower, then there are some complications that could occur. For example, if they are at 90,000 or below, I can't get an epidural because there is a risk for blood clots. But for now I am trying to stay positive and hoping for the best. The doc says that with the way things are looking right now, whether I deliver vaginally or via c-section, she doesn't think I will have an issue with excessive bleeding or need a transfusion.

Before going to the ob, we had an ultrasound done. Emma looks super healthy and my fluid levels are good. However - she is BIG. The tech couldn't get over how big and "ready to be born" she looks. They are estimating her at 7 lbs. 6 oz. and the tech kept saying that if I go to 40 weeks, she'll weigh at least 9 pounds. I know those u/s estimates can be off, but having said that, both DH and I weighed over 9 lbs. at birth, so I wouldn't be surprised if the tech was right on. The ob was concerned with her size, and she says that once I hit 38 and a half weeks, if I've started to dilate, they will likely just induce labor to prevent her from getting too much bigger. I was never a fan of the idea of early induction unless it's medically necessary, but the ob basically told me that the longer I wait and the bigger she gets, the more I put myself at risk for a c-section due to her size. As of today, my cervix is soft and I'm efaced, but still closed. SO - since 38 and a half weeks falls more or less right on Thanksgiving, and they won't induce me on that day or over the holiday weekend, we are looking at possible induction (depending on my progress) on Wednesday the 25th or Monday the 30th...very exciting! :)

I go in on Tuesday morning for another internal so we'll see at that point what the verdict is. I didn't ask her what happens if I get to Monday the 30th (at that point I'll be exactly 39 weeks) without any dilation. I guess at that point I will have to weigh my options and decide whether I want to risk being induced when my cervix is not yet favorable or whether I want to wait it out and risk trying to deliver a 9 lb. butterball.

Thanks for letting me share, and sorry this was so long...I'm sure most of you just glazed over the novel to check out my beautiful daughter's face below ;) I can't get over how cute she is! I'm obsessed with her cheeks and her lips. I love that my regular u/s place takes 3D pics. I wouldn't have gone out of my way to pay for it at a separate place, but since they did it there for free, it was great to be able to see her. DH is OBSESSED with her! Just a few minutes ago I saw him pretend-pinching her cheeks in the picture HAHA.

  • I'm glad the doc just wants to be super careful with all of this, that is very smart. Sounds like you are in GREAT hands. I know this might sound weird but when Gary was going through chemo there were many times when his hemoglobin dropped so low he had to get a transfusion and in doing research he heard that eating beets (canned is fine) is actually really good for your blood. Not sure if it actually works, but I guess its worth a try. Just wanted to suggest that since I just remembered it.
  • YEAH to hearing that everything is good! and HELLO chubby cheeks!!! too cute!

  • Kind of reminds me of what I was going through this time last year!!! I was so swollen they were concerned I would develop pre-e so they sent me in for an induction, then c-section one year ago this coming Saturday... and I had my little guy. :)

Your 3D baby pic is sooooooo adorable!!!! what a sweet little face she has!

  • Emma is soooo cute! It sounds like you're in great hands and I'm glad they are keeping such a close eye on you. Your little girl will be here before you know it!

    Jen :)?

  • I'm late on this one but I wanted to say I'm so happy the platelets are not going to be an issue. GO FOR THE INDUCTION!!! In my case, I soooo wish the doctors would have agreed to one but I had not began to dilate enough so they thought it would have not worked. From the beginning Nico measured big on all ultrasounds. I had an ultrasound on Thursday and he was born on sunday measuring exactly what they said he would weigh. If two weeks really makes a difference in the size of the baby and you have less of a chance for a section, then i think its totally worth it. Emma is beautiful!! What a great picture!
