Ours is $1400 out of pocket so we have decided against it. We are both young & have no family history of problems so our risk is lower. Plus all the false positives scare me! I couldn't deal with that!

I get the not doing it because it's expensive and you are young. But really, the statement about "all the false postives" isn't very accurate. You're not told your baby does or does not have Downs after the NT scan. You're only told a statistical probability of the baby having Downs. It's only considered a "screen positive" if your odds exceed the cutoff (my OB's cutoff is 1 in 300). 1 in 300 by the way is still extremely low odds that the baby has Downs. And, only 5% of woman tested are told they have a "screen positive" result and the baby doesn't actually have a problem.
I just basically asked this on the multiples board... I think I'm opting out... especially since the test can have abnormal results, even when not abnormal, due to multiples....
a lot of people are saying if your insurance covers then get it for the extra u/s, but I don't want extra stress...i FEEl like everyone is healthy, plus the quad screen is covered & they do that second tri, so that's what I'll do I think.
(Oh, my Dr. said he wouldn't advise his own daughter who is my age to get it, at 22 your chances are 1 in 1600...)
The false positives scare me. My husband and I have agreed that we will deal with whatever happens and we aren't going to stress ourselves out with all the testing. Plus, at the 20 week u/s will give us an idea about the health of the fetus.

It is fair enough that you don't want the stress of testing or that you will deal with it no matter the results.
But when people talk about "all the false positives" it is simply reinforcing a misperception about the test.
DH and I decided we'll take any non-invasive tests they would like to offer us.
Apparently its not very popular in our particular clinic, but I'm all for it.
Really, if they offer it to you (or its covered by your insurance) I would suggest taking a genetics class if it is availible. That made everything a lot clearer.
My wording was off sorry! I know how it works and I've had 3 friends that got the higher percentage chance results (all went on to have healthy normal babies) and seeing the stress/fear/heartbreak they went through for the rest of their pregnancy just put it off for me! Bad choice of words though!
We had ours last monday (Dr said baby looks Great!) It was a very reasonable copay for me to do the scan and even though we aren't considered to be at risk, and I would never terminate the pregnancy based on the results, my husband and I decided the non invasive testing couldn't hurt.
If I'm being totally honest, we mostly decided to do it for an extra chance to get a peak at our LO, and I don't see anything wrong with that!
Plus, if the test had shown any indication of a health issue, it would have given us extra time to learn more about our LOs condition and better prepare ourselves for raising the baby.

We did it yesterday because it was covered by insurance. But i went into not as a "panic about testing" but rather a chance to see our baby.
We had a 45 min sonogram where she showed us EVERYTHING!! and just got to sit and watch our LO move and kick and that was amazing.
This exactly - I can't wait to see the LO squirming about. We're not particularly worried about the findings, but my NP did say that this is one of the appointments that DH should be at just in case we need to support each other. Something to think about. Ours is 12/4.
I am 35 and DH is 45. We also agreed to do any non-invasive tests. We also would never terminate, but are doing it more to see LO again. DH wasn't able to make my last appt, so I am excited for him to see our baby. I have mine on the 30th and can't wait. Still a little anxious about it, but I get that way with every appt.
we went ahead and got it done. my fiance & i are both low risk for any genetic disorders and i am only 23, but because we didn't find out right away (i was on birth control and didn't notice anything was off until about 8/9 weeks) and i had committed quite a few "pregnancy no-no's" we decided to go for it. i checked first to make sure my insurance covered, since i knew a lot of them didn't cover the optional tests, but luckily ours does. if it will help put your mind at ease, then by all means go for it. plus, it's nice to be able to watch the LO move around for an hour or so

It was covered by our insurance so we decided to do it. For us it was important to be as informed as possible, in case any issues were present. I'm so glad we did it. Everything came back normal and it was a great opportunity to see our LO again.
What I didn't realize about the NT scan is that it isn't just a test for Downs. At least it wasn't for me. They take blood, and they test for other possible trisomies. Downs is a manageable condition with with people can live full lives. Trisomy 13 or 18 are not. But then again, I felt really good after the scan yesterday, but thinking about it now has me all worried again. So yeah, it can be anxiety causing during the process, but for me that anxiety is worth the knowledge.
Not doing it, mainly because my insurance only covers like $100. My OB didn't even suggest I do it though, I had to ask about it. I am young and have no family history, so really, it's not worth it.

This exactly! I just want to see my LO again before 20 weeks. I like to be prepared and to be well educated just in case. I think I'll be a better parent if need be.
I got mine (another excuse to see LO), and everything looks good. I wanted it because I figured if there was something wrong, I'd have more time to do research and find any specialist doctors or anything I needed just in case. But, LO looks healthy, so now there's no worries!!

We're going to do it. I see it as a chance to see LO again, and really, I'm going to worry about everything no matter what, so I see this as a chance to get a little more reassurance.

Thanks everybody for posting your opinions. DH and I are still on the fence about the issue. There were a couple of issues I hadn't really thought about (like whether insurance will cover).
Re: NT-where do you stand?

I just don't see the point honestly. We wouldn't abort, and I have no desire to spend my pregnancy worrying about a disease my child may have.
