Breastfeeding

How long are u planning on breastfeeding?

How long will you BF?

Im gonna to try to keep it going once I return to work...although it will be challenging as I am a nurse and work 12hr shifts so will have to pump lots!

Just wondering what other people's plans were....I know BF is sooo good for DS, just not sure how long I can keep it up for...

Re: How long are u planning on breastfeeding?

  • I'm planning to stick with it for at least a year...although I may go ahead and just let her self wean.  It makes it easier that I am a SAHM.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.  Any amount of breastfeeding you do is beneficial and if weaning when you go back to work makes everyone happier, then that's what you should do.

  • Original plan was as long as possible (up to 1 year).  Now that I'm actually doing it and realize this is the most difficult thing I've ever done, I'm making mini goals.  My first mini goal is 6 weeks.  Even if this is via EPing.  So far I've been pumping and BFing together due to supply issues and DS having issues with sucking properly.
  • I BF (partially) DD1 until she was 15 months old.  I will BF DD2 (exclusively until 12 months, with cow's milk after) until she weans or turns two whichever comes first.

A friend of mine is a nurse and she BFed her son until he was a year and worked 12 hour shifts.  but she worked nights so I don't think she had to pump as much.  I'm not sure how it all worked, but he didn't even get a drop of formula.  the hospital that she worked at had pumps for the lactating moms to use so she only had to bring horns and the pump was already all set up in the room.

  • I have been thinking about this as well.  I have been just taking things week by week.  I am a little surprised that I have already made it to 2 months.  I suspect that once I go back to work (in January) I will need to re-evaluate and see how it goes.

  • Kate just turned 1 on Monday, and I have no plans to wean this winter.  I'm thinking that if she doesn't self wean before she turns 2, I'll probably wean her then.
  • Hoping for 1 yr+.  I work full-time and pumping is a pain but after being back at work for over 5 months now, it's just part of my normal routine (I pump 3x/day).  I'm hoping to drop to 1x/day once he turns 1. I recommend getting a good efficient double electric pump if you don't have one already.  GL!

  • Before I had her I said one year. Im in a lot of pain & having a very hard time with little support, so I tried to set mini goals & take it one day at a time. I am trying to make it to 3-4 weeks before I try pumping & giving her pumped milk. Im hoping that will make things a little easier on me and Ill be able to keep going. I try to just make it through one day / night at a time. Usually at nights is when I want to give up.
  • I'd like to let kiddo self wean.  We are almost 11 months now and still going strong!

Set little goals for yourself - you may be surprised at how much easier it gets.

  • My goal is 6 months.  It was so difficult in the beginning that I set little goals of just getting through the week.  I'll admit, it's been really hard since I've gone back to work, but it's been nearly 3 months back at work and I'm still going strong.

  • 1 year, plus part time bfing with cow's milk introduced after that.  I plan to wean around 18 months.

I nursed DD until 15 months.

Hang in there newbies...it gets so much easier! Small goals are definitely the way to go, before you know it you'll be hitting 6+ months, etc.

  • With #1, I was very neutral about BF up till the time she was born. I figured I'd give it a try and see how it goes. Once I started, I became very passionate about BF and nursed her until she was 15 months. (She also got cows milk starting at 12 months).

With #2, I was determined to go for at least a year. Once we made that mark, I have decidied to go as long as possible through the winter/flu season, primarily b/c of H1N1. DS will be 15 months on Monday and we still nurse 2-3x/day.

  • At this point, I guess when ever DD is ready to be done.  Not sure if that will come while I'm pg or whether we'll tandem nurse.  I just kind of take things as they come and see how we feel at the time.

    FWIW, I work full-time.

  • I hope to ebf ds until he is 6 mo. old.  I am going back to grad school in jan. when ds is 5 mo. old.  i really don't even know where i am going to pump during the week at school (i am afraid it will be the bathroom).  i think i can do that for one month until he is 6 mo. old.  After that, I am not so sure - i might have to start supplementing with formula but hopefully i can at least keep bfing in the morning and at night for a while (10 mo. - 1 year?).
  • I stopped pumping at 12 months. I weaned DD at 38 months. I was planning to let her self wean, but her latch had gotten so bad I couldn't do it anymore. I ended up with deep teeth marks on my nipples from her top teeth after just a few minutes of nursing. I finally gave up.
