Babies on the Brain

Summer Babies vs. Winter Babies

Would you rather have a summer baby or a winter baby and why?

If you're a mommy already, what are some ups and downs of having a summer baby? What about the ups and downs of having a winter baby?

 I'm just curious!

Re: Summer Babies vs. Winter Babies

  • What do you have against spring and fall babies?

    HAHAHAHA

She thinks you can PLAN this.

  • My advice:  Take whatever healthy, happy baby you can get.

I love my winter baby, and I would have loved her whatever season she was born in.

  • FWIW even if you try to have a summer baby you could end up with a winter one or vice versa.
  • I want a early spring baby.  This is only because my sister is a teacher and could keep the child until she went back to school in the fall.  And that would keep my phantom child out of daycare until they were a little older.
  • I had a late spring/early summer baby and I thought it was perfect!  The only down fall was being outside extended amounts of time and being paranoid he was overheating, also the hot car really sucked.  But the opposite in the winter is also true.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • I liked being pregnant in the summer. Tank tops and tshirts are so much cheaper than maternity sweaters and coats. Other than that I didn't really care.

ETA: OP didn't say she was planning a pregnancy for a specific season, sounds like she's just asking what people would prefer if they could pick.

  • But we aren't even ttc yet so who knows what season baby I will get.
  • Zip it!

  • It's a baby. Who cares when you have it since you can't exactly plan it. You can TRY to concieve to have it at a certain time but it's a slim chance. To me its always the season to have a baby but my body disagrees.

  • I just want a healthy baby. It just so happens she is due in March and I am thrilled with that.  Just as I would have been equally thrilled if her edd was November.
  • I just want a baby. I'll take it in any season.
  • Huh? If my baby isn't born the season I want it to, I'm sending it back.
  • I will take any baby I can get. I never understood trying for a certain month. Do I think I would be cool for my kids to have pool bday parties? Yes. Am I going to only try on months where my EDD would be in the summer? No.

  • ppsssst... you could have a baby in the spring and they'll still be a baby in the winter.

    Why does it matter?

  • You didn't ask about spring babies but....

I am due in late March. I'm told that is a "good" time because the weather should be nice so I can go for walks with the baby and not feel all holed up inside while on leave and also the kid won't be the oldest or the youngest in his school.

Also in terms of buying maternity clothes, I only have to buy for one season (cold) really. It won't get that warm where I live by March.

FWIW, as others have said, it really doesn't matter. Most people don't get pregnant the month/season they want to get pregnant so I wouldn't even bother trying to plan for that.

  • Apparently TX only has two seasons?  lol.

I think each has their ups and downs but at least you would have a little one to experience it all with.

Not sure what direction we are headed. Either way, I am up for the ride.
  • I was born in June. Loved it growing up because I could have fun outdoor bday parties.

My LO is due Dec. 11th. Obviously we won't be doing pool parties for their bday.  Oh well.

You got a bunch of snark because it can be hard to "plan" a due date.  By the time we got pregnant we had been trying for 8 months - I wasn't willing to avoid TTC in March b/c I would have a Christmas time baby.  Some people are.

Most people on this board just want a healthy baby, no matter what season.

  • My first was a fall baby.  This one is a winter baby.  All the seasons have pros and cons but I agree with another poster that Summer maternity is cheaper than winter.

  • Guess I should be disappointed in my spring baby then?  Huh?

  • It's silly to try to plan what season to have a baby. You never know how long it will take to get pregnant, and there are pros and cons to any season.

That said, I am very happy to be having a summer baby, because I am and have always loved having a summer birthday.

    LOL

  • While I don't think this is a "good" question I know a ton of people who have thought about this even before they ttc'd. I always knew I would love and want my baby (now, babies) now matter WHEN they were born, I just wanted them. That doesn't mean my friends and I have never talked about summer vs. winter babies. My friend and I discussed this just last week.

My birthday is in November and hers in December. We are a month and a day a part. (She's been my best friend since 5th grade.) This meant neither of us ever had a pool party. We never got to play outside during our birthdays. There was never a cook-out. Half the kids canceled their rsvps because they came down with the flu. We got sick on our birthdays due to the cold weather. We had to cancel birthdays because of snow storms.

Clearly these are all frivolous reasons but a little part of me is excited for my kids that they will get to experience on their birthdays what I never did.

Everyone here knows I love me some snark but people are jumping to it a little too quickly in my opinion.

  • I am not TTC neither will I try any time soon. It was just a random question. But I am glad I made you laugh.

Actually, Lucy, Texas DOES only have two seasons.  Or, in the case of today, sometimes both seasons on a single day.  It was 35 degrees this morning.  Now it is 72.

And to the OP - I could have cared less about when my baby was born.  Yes, being pregnant in summer in Texas would have SUCKED.  But it wouldn't have made me want or love my baby any less, and that's what's important.

  • I'm a little worried about my winter baby in that we can get a LOT of snow here in Wisconsin in January, and I know before long I'll be dealing with bad roads, icy sidewalks, etc.  That said, I'm also not overheating constantly right now, which is nice.

  • my daughter was born in July.   She only wore onesies (all day and to sleep too) until she was more than 3 months.

(she's wearing only a onesie with socks right now).

too hot to mess with all sorts of clothes

    I agree.

Even though I obviously would have been happy with being due at any time, I'm pretty happy about being due at the end of March for all the reasons Becky listed.  I'm thrilled about not being pregnant in the summer (well, technically I was, but it's not like a was big and miserable, I was just pukey and miserable).

  • I think this is an interesting/fun question, fwiw.

I'm psyched to be having a July baby because:

    - I always wished I had a summer birthday

    - there will always be fireworks around their bday (due July 2)

    - Wearing a sundress and flip flops in my biggest months sounds appealling

    - I'll be out of school during my biggest months (June/July)

I could've come up with cool/good reasons for having a baby any time of year, but those are just my reasons for July!

This is one disadvantage of your baby being born in winter:  slipping and pulling your episiotomy stitches.

    Ouch x 1000.

  • DD was born April 4th.  It was pretty nice really.  I got to enjoy my summer found out I was pregnant in the beginning of August.  Morning sickness didn't hit until mid August.  I had m/s the entire pregnancy, but I was in the 2nd trimester by the holidays so a lot of women's m/s goes away by then.  Also I felt far enough along to let my entire family know during the holidays and didn't have to worry about hiding it or anything like that.  Also I was starting to show and felt the best around the holidays.  I didn't have to be really pregnant during the summer.  I didn't have to worry about snow storms and having to drive in them if I went into labor.  It was still pretty chilly when I first had her, so I didn't feel like I was missing out on the warm weather.  The first 4 weeks I didn't feel like doing much post c-section.

The bad part was trying to keep DD covered while outside during the summer since my pedi recommended no sunscreen until 6 months.  Also I was no where near back to my pp body during the summer and couldn't hide it as well as I could in winter clothes.

That hurts me just to read! Ouch!

I did have a nasty fall when I was pregnant over the summer.  DD was fine, but it scared the crap out of me.  I was around 30 weeks give or take.
