Hospital Bag HELP!!

Hey girls,

So, I'm trying to pack my hospital bag so I'm ready to go -- but anytime I google lists, it just seems like they are really excessive.  Unless I have a c-section, I will only be in the hospital for 2 nights...and since a large chunk of that will be labor, I'm not planning on wearing much besides the hospital gown they give you and my robe & slippers if I need to walk around as part of the labor process.

I've packed robe, slippers, a nursing tank for the 2nd day, a sweatshirt hoodie to pull over the nursing tank and some sweat pants, and toiletries.  And, I'm going to bring a going home outfit for me & the baby.

What else do I really need?  Any good tips???

Also -- what did your DH's bring?

Re: Hospital Bag HELP!!

  • I packed a robe & slippers for myself and didn't wear them at all. I stayed in a nursing tank & the hospital gown the entire time I was there. Honestly, there was so much pp bleeding and my bladder control was so bad after a vag. delivery that I would have ruined any of my own clothes.

Are you sure you'll be in labor that long? I was only in labor for 5 hours of the 2 days I was in the hospital...

  • Lap top, cell phone, charger, camera, any games you would want to play while in labor or whenever, a personal pillow (I loved my pillow and hated the hospital pillows). My DH brought a change of clothes, some change for vending machines, any snacks he wanted, sucking candy (like lemon drops) for me...however I didn't use those.

  • Also, I was not in labor that long. I got to the hopsital at midnight and DS was born at 3am so I had  A LOT of time on my hands.

  • Thanks girls....that helps.  It seemed to me like the list of clothing items, etc...was a bit on the excessive side.

As for laboring that long - No, I hope not to be in labor that long :)  Hopefully it will be 3 or 5 hours like you girls had!!!  I'm just mentally preparing myself for the worst so anything will seem easy in comparison. HA!!

I'll probably throw in a pack of cards and/or a book or something in case I do have a lot of time on my hands if I have a shorter labor.

Love the idea of bringing my own pillow, though - that's a good one!

  • I brought my Boppy for breastfeeding, and I'm really glad I did.
  • Oh I thought of a couple more things:

-toothbrush and toothpaste (your mouth will feel like sawdust!)

-some cheap toiletries (like the ones you buy to travel...shampoo, soap, body wash, tissues)

  • That's all you'll really need. Don't forget clothes, a towel, chargers. My husband brought snacks, a change of clothes and his PSP. (He's a video game nerd though, lol)

  • I stayed in the hospital gown until I got dressed to go home. If you're breastfeeding you might want to bring a Boppy if you have one. Otherwise it sounds like you're good to go. They provide almost everything you need.
  • don't forget the lanisoh cream if you are bf.

I wore hospital stuff and a bra the whole time I was there (incl their slippers and a second gown as a robe).  I wore home the same outfit I wore there (um, I still looked very very pregnant).  I brought a couple outfits for DS; he only wore one of course, I just couldn't decide.  Definitely bring a camera and a book.

I had a scheduled c/s, but I thought they don't discharge you until 2 days AFTER the baby was born.

  • thanks for the input girls!!
