3rd Trimester

To induce or not to induce...

So I am 38 weeks and 5 days and my doc offered to induce next week tuesday. I told her I would rather wait until I am 40 weeks and induce after that. So, she said I could probably get induced the 27th (my due date) or Saturday the 28th. The more I think about it the more I wonder how much of a difference 4 days will make if I wait to induce until friday or saturday. Plus, I don't work, and my husband would have w, th, f, s, and sun off because of Thanksgiving. Not sure what to do--what would you do?

Re: To induce or not to induce...

  • after 37 wks, your full term. So I wouldn't worry about the 4days and what it would do. Your baby is going to be fine!  ...It's really how you feel. If you want to wait, wait. If you think a certain day would be good due to time off, that's great.

  • Why would you induce and not just wait until you go into labor? Why does everyone have to PLAN everything. There are only so many surprises in life, and this is a happy one...

  • My unpopular opinion would be to induce earlier, but that's just me. If you are more comfortable with waiting to have your LO, then just wait. You're right... in the end, 4 days doesn't make that big of a difference.
  • If you feel comfortable with the induction I would say go for it before so that DH can have more time with you. Unless you have big Thanksgiving plans that you don't want to miss. I asked my OB to still start me Friday rather than wait until Saturday morning so that my mom could have more time with us.

  • 4 days could make a HUGE difference. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that docs are willing to induce people for no medical reason. your baby will come when your baby is ready to come. Let your body do it naturally even if it ends up being after your due date.  Don't you want the excited of going in to labor?? That for me was such am amazing feeling. I know you are probably anxiously awaiting your LO but being induce will greatly increase your odds of having a c section. Seriously, DON"T get indued, especially before your due date. And if you have another baby, find another doc because anyone willing to induce you this early should NOT be practicing.

This.  At my baby care class last night, our instructor talked about this.  She is a NICU nurse and is tired of seeing SICK babies because of inductions before 40 weeks.  Babies all develop differently, and when we screw with the plan, we cause problems.  She said there are 6 babies currently in the NICU who were term but still need extra support.  All were inductions or c-sections before 40 weeks.

  • My unpopular opinion - your OB is trying to induce you on Tuesday so she won't be inconvenienced should you go into labor on Thanksgiving and she can't eat her turkey and cranberry sauce.

I agree with you--This is my dilemma- I don't want to plan it, but at the same time I want my husband home as much as possible after ds is born...thanks for your opinions ladies

Well I know that is definately why she wants to do it tuesday--she even said her family will be in town for turkey day.

Uh huh.  So, she is willing to possibly risk YOUR child in the NICU b/c she wants to hang out with the fam??  Why are these people doctors then?

Sorry, that is totally unfair to you.  Unless there was a medical issue (or you were 41 weeks, which I totally agree with), I would tell her to stay away from the uterus until baby is good and ready.

I think you are right. I will tell her that I don't want to induce until the following week if necessary. My husband can figure something out with work to get some time off. There is no medical reason to induce, so why risk anything with the baby. You helped me see how stupid that sounds to induce for no real reason accept my OB's selfish reasons.

I don't agree.  I was induced 3 days before my due date last time and DS was NOT ready to come out.  Things did not progress well and ended in an emergency C-section.  There's a reason you're not in labor yet, even if you're "full term".  I wouldn't do it unless there was a danger to you or your LO's life. Period.
