ffn test questions/advice

how many of you have had it and what are your thoughts on it.  Long story short, DHs close family has OBs in it and they are really pushing me to have the test (had some mild cramping this weekend with no other issues) My dr. is not a big fan of the test (I think because of the postives not being that "strong")  I would go get it from DHs family, but then what - tell my dr "hey I got the test outside of you and here are the restuls?)  that's kind of crappy.  I have to go to the dr. this week and want to figure out if I should push him to give me the test even though he doesn't typically give it.  any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.  TIA

Re: ffn test questions/advice

  • I'm pretty sure it's a fairly simple swab type of test if I remember correctly.  It can't hurt to have it done.  If it comes back positive then you can take further action, if it's negative everyone will probably calm down Smile

  • I've had two.  The first one was a little over 4 weeks ago and was negative.  The second one was a little over 2 weeks ago and it was positive.  Even if they are positive, I believe the chance that you'll go into labor within the next two weeks is only like 17%, I could be off with this number.

I passed those two weeks and I'm still doing great.  I saw the MFM today and he doesn't want to see me back for another 3 weeks.  Basically a negative is great, but a positive doesn't mean for sure anything will happen.  My doctor said a + just shows that the body is preparing for labor.
  • Alot of doctors do not use FFN testing because of the unreliabilty of it predicting impending labor.
  • Yea, my doc did it at the end but not before then. Basically she said it just gets the mom worked up about her labor that sometimes does nto happen. lol

  • I have had 2 done. One at 28 weeks and another at 32 weeks in the hospital contracting and spotting. Both results were negative. I was told a negative is pretty reliable in that you will not go into labor in the next 2 weeks and a positive is harder to determine. It could mean you COULD go into labor so they are able to take measures (injectons, etc). It was like a pap smear, just swabs your cervix but they need to hold the swab there for 30 seconds to look for the fibers.
