I am just curious as to how many moms to be out there have rolled up there sleeves to get the flu shot? What made you decide to get it and how do you feel about it afterwords? I am really struggling, I'm so scared that something will go wrong with the baby in the future. HELP ![]()
Re: Moms to be who have had there FLU SHOT?
BFP #2 February 2009 | m/c March 2009 | 4 weeks 3 days
BFP #7 10/15 | DS born 6/4/16 @ 36 weeks
BFP #8 9/28/17 AHHH!!! | EDD 6/6/18
All are welcome!
I got both the Flu Shot and the H1N1, I was really uncertain on both since all the talk about the H1N1 and then I've never gotten a Flu Shot before. My dr highly recommended both and so I just gave in and trusted what he was saying. My DH has had both too, again by dr's recommendations.
Everything seems to be fine and to calm my nerves I just kept telling myself I could really hurt the baby if I didn't get them and ended up sick. Once I became pregnant, I saw things completely differently, you just don't realize how disgusting and unsanitary so many people can be. I think I'd rather take my chances with the vaccines.

I got both the Flu and the H1N1. It was the first flu shot of my life. I didn't even think it was necessary until I thought about how pregnant I'll be during flu season and I do typically get the flu every few years. I usually recover well but I've never been pregnant before either. I got it for the health of myself in the 3rd tri and the health of my child. I know there are risks, but I was more willing to accept the risks of getting the shots than the risks of not getting them. My baby girl seems to be doing just fine now too - kicking stronger and stronger each day!
Also, the big fear with vaccines is autism, and I've seen a number of articles out right now debunking that theory. It could just be that the pro-vaccine crowd is pushing this, but the articles I read that state there is a correlation could only state just that - there is a correlation. There is nothing I've seen that actually ties vaccines to autism and autism rates have been found to be similar in non-vaccinated children.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Yes - I got both. I got the regular flu shot with my son and had no problems. When I asked several OBs in my practice about the "newness" of the H1N1 vax, they explained that the vaccine was made with the same process, same ingredients, same testing as the regular flu vaccine. The only difference is the dead virus. In fact, had H1N1 come around sooner, it would have simply been included with the seasonal flu vaccine as one overall flu vax for the year. That argument made a lot of sense to me since I have no concerns with the regular flu vaccine.
Also, having a toddler who goes to play groyps and music class, it's hard to avoid germs no matter how much I wash my hands and his. It was just way too likely we were going to be exposed and I didn't want to take the risk.
You are right to be cautious and do your research.
I read up about it. What pushed me to the 'yes' group was how my OBs practice went from 'if you want it' to "strongly urging" once some a few of their paitents contracted H1N1.
Honestly I wasn't going to get one. My husband sat down with me, almost begging, and told me to look at it this way:
If you don't get the shot based on the fact that you're scared, stubborn, whatever the reason, and something (God forbid) goes wrong, you'll always blame yourself for not taking the precautions recommended.
If you do get the shot, and (God forbid) something happens, at least you were trying your best to do everything for you babies health and your own.
I know a lot of people will disagree with that, but that's the only reason I got mine. Now looking back, I'm glad I did.
I got both the seasonal and the H1N1. I am not worried about either at all. I was more concerned about having the flu while pregnant and the possible effects it would have on LO than the vaccines. I did lots of research and talked to different people in the medical field. I have several indoor shows this winter where I will be talking to a TON of people, shaking hands, and handling money. I am happy with my decision and didn't even have sore shoulders after the shots.
I got both the seasonal flu shot and the H1N1 shot. I had no problem or guilt getting either of them. When I was PG with my 4.5yr old DD, I got a seasonal shot at my first visit upon the Dr's insistance. My OB strongly encouraged me to get both seasonal and H1N1 shot this year, so I did. No worries.
I got the H1N1 but have not gotten the seasonal. I was supposed to get the seasonal at my last OB appointment but they ran out. I'm searching for one, but am having a hard time finding it.
My OB recommends both. She HIGHLY recommended the H1N1 and said that the seasonal was good to get if I could. IMO, the benefits far outweigh the risks.
I got both in the thimersol free versions within the last two weeks...no side effects besides a sore arm for a day or two.
I've received the regular flu shot every year since 1999; that year I got the flu. I've never been so sick in my life. I had never had it before (people call bad colds or respiratory infections the flu...the real flu is scary and can be very dangerous.) I could not imagine going through the racking coughs, dehydration, high fever, shaking, aching hell while pregnant. My job required frequent air / hotel travel and I knew my exposure risk would be high through my pregnancy, therefore I decided to get both shots.
Speak to your health care provider. Speak to your family. Look at your exposure and risk profile. Do what is best for you, your baby and your family.
I took me and my 2-1/2 year old son to get the FLU shot and the H1N1 shot. I just felt that I was going to do everything possible to make sure I didn't get sick. I know some people have gotten the Flu/H1N1 and been OK, but I didn't want to take the chance. Plus, we've gotten the Flu shot every year and had no problems.
I got seasonal and H1N1 shots. Never had a flu shot before now. I agree with OP...it's not just my life anymore. Besides, being prenant weakens the immune system and I wouldn't be able to fight it as well as I might have in the past. This is a LONG reply...just an FYI (I think AND talk too much).
A few things made me go for it (other than the basic thing, above):
1) I was on the fence because I was afraid of potential problems/side effects for baby. However, when I really thought about how I felt about vaccines, it made me go for it. I think about how many people DON'T have polio because of vaccines. I think about how many people I've NOT heard of getting rubella...and the choice was easier. I know a lot of anti-vaccine people (and I'm NOT knocking their choice/beliefs AT ALL) are afraid that vaccines cause things like Autism, etc. IMO, now that medicine is more advanced than it used to be...it's easier to associate two unrelated medical 'things' with one another. In other words, a long time ago, anyone with any mental/physical birth defect was called retarded. They just didn't have the medical knowledge we do now. At the same time medicine was advancing enough to individually identify these defects (Autism, Downs, etc), it was advancing enough to create vaccines. Though the two things aren't related (again, IMO), it's easy to see why it might be interpreted that way.
2) My neurotic BIL who won't let his kids take cold medicine when they're sick said I should get it (and if he wasn't neurotic about that....I figured I'm on the right track getting it).
3) My mother, who lives in FLA, said she was afraid to come visit if I didn't get it. She ALWAYS gets sick when she flies and she was afraid she'd get it on the plane and give it to me. I want to see my mommy!
I had both. The benifits outweighted the risks IMO.
this exactly! It didn't hurt & the benefits of the shot outweighed my fear of getting it. I'm glad I did!
I got the regular flu shot and the H1N1 also; I have not had any side effects from either of them.
I have asthma and really bad allergies. For the past 2 years I have gotten pneumonia, so I am trying to as much as I can to not get sick.

my thought process: i seem to get the flu every year, in fact, i was hospitalized overnight last march with a fever of over 103. i would have felt so irresponsible if something happened to me or the baby this season...the h1n1 is made exactly the same way that the seasonal flu shot is made, and the shot is the safest option (of tamiflu or nasal spray). i trust and value the opinion of my ob/gyn (otherwise he wouldn't be my dr.), and he STRONGLY recommended it.
it didn't hurt, i didn't have any residual effects, and i'm so glad i did it.
I got both the seasonal & H1N1 shots and everything has been just fine. No symptoms afterwards or anything. I was hesitant to get them at first, since I've never had a flu shot in the past, but my OB recommended getting both. I knew I didn't want to put the baby in jeopardy so I went ahead.
As much as I worry about the side effects on the baby, I would rather play it safe and protect her now just in case something were to happen. And, I'm really glad I got the shots considering that DH just had the flu last week. Thankfully I was able to avoid catching anything!
I got both of mine and have no regrets whatsoever. I get a seasonal flu shot every year, have for years and have no plans to stop. Due to my allergies and asthma I tend to get very sick so any precaution I can take, I'm taking it.
As for deciding to do this during pregnancy, my OB HIGHLY recommended it. To the point of saying 'You will get them both' I still had a choice of course but knowing he felt as strongly as he did about it, I felt very good about my choice. Not to mention the fact that it seems like everyone around me is coming down with the flu. I work in an office full of women that are contstantly sick due to their kids, plus, I work pt bartending in a bowling alley where there are so many germs to begin with. I use hand sanitizer after touching just about everything that someone else may have touched/drank from as it is....
Honestly, this is a personal decision that you must make for yourself but personally, I'd rather risk the 'possibility' of long term affects rather than the flu itself.
I got both--about 2 weeks apart. ?Arm hurt a little, but nothing different than when not pregnant. ?
Got a flu shot when I was pregnant with my first son too. ?There are MANY known risks to having a high fever when pregnant to unborn baby & some other links to various issues as well. ?So, to me, getting the flu shots are a no-brainer!?
