Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

D&C- what to expect

My doctor told me it was a 10 minute procedure...Is this right?  Do you have to stay in the hospital awhile to rest?  Not looking forward to this at all...

Re: D&C- what to expect

  • I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Honestly, it isn't that bad, in the physical sense. I was in and out this last time in a few hours. Once you are awake, and able to walk and go to the bathroom on your own, they get you out of there so you can go home and rest. At least that was my experience, and I have had two at different hospitals (in different states).

Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss.

As for the procedure, it is very easy. I was in the hospital for approx. 5 hours, that's including check in time two hours before the procedure. The actual procedure only took about 15 mins, I was awake after 20 mins, and then they made me relax and finish my IV. I woke up feeling like I needed to go to the washroom very badly, which was how I reacted to the pain, it was more uncomfortable than anything. They made me stay laying down for about 30 minutes, and I then went to the washroom (finally), had a snack and juice and I spoke to the nurses about what to expect in the next two weeks. They gave me antibiotics and asked if I wanted more pain medication, I said no because I was very hungry and didn't want to throw up my dinner (some times this happens to me with pain meds) and then I went home. You cannot drive, and you will want to go home and just relax, have a nap, no work or anything strenuous, you may even want to take the next day off. I hope this helps, I tried to be as detailed as poss.

  • I just had mine yesterday and was there about 5 hours, but my surgery was delayed by an hour because I was an add-on, so really 4 hours.  I was wheeled into surgery at 5:50pm and was awake at about 6:40pm.  We left about 8pm.  Procedure was about 15-20 minutes.

Overall, it was not bad at all.  The staff of docs and nurses were incredibly sensitive and kind.  It is important to have your DH or someone close with you.  I was a little nervous, but it passed rather quickly.

I've been resting quite a bit today, but also managed a couple errands (driven by hubby), which wiped me out, but overall doing okay.  For me, I am glad the physical part is basically over and I can begin to move forward.  Best of luck to you, but i'm sure you'll do great.

  • I am sooo sorry for your lost.  The procedure was really quick; howver the worst part was the prep before surgery (plus my doctor was late). I had to get there a few hours early and was out about 1-1.5 hours after I went in. I woke up really quickly after my surgery and told me I could stay as long as needed; but I wanted to get out of there so I had them page DH right away.  Sorry you have to go through that tomorrow.

  • Sorry for your loss!

Ditto everything said here. Just take it easy and don't worry.

  • physically easy, mentally horrible had mine thursday M/C'd wed before next day back to regular life no pain at all, i haven't even took a tylenol had some brown drainage minimun amount.  Goodluck and so sorrry
  • I had a d&c on November 6.  With my first missed m/c, I was given Cytotec, and I didn't want to do that again.  My next two were natural, so it didn't matter.  I wanted a d&c with this m/c.  My doctor agreed, and I am so glad that I did it.  Out of all four m/c, this has been the easiest recovery.  The procedure does last 10-15 minutes if it is uncomplicated.  You will spend more time in recovery then you will in the actual surgery.

My d&c itself only took about 10 minutes.  They had a little trouble waking me up, though, so coming out of anesthesia took longer then they expected.  The worst part was my emotions.  I knew what was coming at my repeat u/s, so I controlled my emotions all day.  When I came out of surgery, however, I was really upset because I had no control over myself at that point.  All together, I was in the hospital for about 2.5 hours or so.  They let me leave when I was able to pee, which I had to do as soon as I was brought back to room.

  • I am so sorry for your loss:( I had mine last tuesday and it was very short. I had to arrive at the hosital an hour and a half before. I was in the OR for just about thirty minutes total according to the nurse. My recovery took longer because I was having really low blood pressures and they couldn't figure out why. All in all, it is a pretty quick procedure.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.  {{hugs}} I had a D&E which is slightly different from a D&C, but the whole process from check in to being wheeled out to the car lasted about 3.5 hours. I am glad I opted for the procedure rather than waiting for a natural M/C.
