2nd Trimester

Pray for me!?!

I have to go to the dentist on Thursday. I am severe anxiety when it comes to dental work. One tooth is currently breaking and about to fall out. I need 2 root canals and some fillings done. I am seriously starting to go into panic mode.

Tips?

(This anxiety stems from my childhood dentist who did two fillings without anything for the pain. I cried and he told me to suck it up... )

Re: Pray for me!?!

  • I work for two dentist and we see anxious people all the time. Just remember that dentistry has come a long way and they want you to be comfortable and will do everything they can to make it as easy as possible for you. Let them know your scared and they'll be extra gentle! Good luck, I'm sending positive thought your way!

Pop some B6 & 12 before you go (clear it with your OB first of course). B vitamins are a natural anti-anxiety.

And... Yeah. I would hate the dentist too. Sounds like your old dentist is a jerky douchebag.

  • Ugh, I have a severe fear of the dentist.

I looked around for almost a year for a dentist that I liked.  Now I'm okay with her.  She knows I'm scared of her, though.  lol. She gives me lollipops now.

I sob the whole time they are doing work. I lay on my back with my knees up and shoes off, it is really a production. I even bit my last dentist, not on purpose of course.

I am not to keen on this lady, last time she told me that I should probably just change my attitude. We are looking to change but can't just yet.

  • I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Dentists freak me out.

  • After not going to the dentist for an extended period of time and going to a CRAPPY dentist for an extended period of time lead my husband and I each to spend about $5000.00 each on our teeth.  I had to get several fillings, two root canals, and one oral surgery once because of an abcess (I was in the ER twice for this abcess and the oral surgeon the next day said I should have been admitted because it was so bad.  And it hurt so bad that I was on IV antibiotics and Morphine.)

Going to the dentist all those time definitely wasn't as bad as I rembered it being so I am sure you will be fine.

And I do take care of my teeth, I just have poor enamel and no protection from anything I eat...After rereading this post I thought people might think my personal hygiene is poor, but it really isn't!

  • They have dentists that actually sedate people now because of anxiety. I am not sure if this is safe during pregnancy but if they give some drug that is a safe one for pregnant mommas. i.e. morphine. I might take it if it was that bad for me.

It sounds like you'll be there for a while for all the work so it might be something to look into.

I also don't like dentist. I didn't feel this way till I was an adult. I am a vet tech and do routine cleanings on animals and just knowing what all the equipment does and the terms and stuff scare the bejeebies out of me.

I think I might be developing a problem as well and really need to look into finding a dentist here. Since I have moved here I have not needed to go.

  • I work for a dentist too, we also see a lot of patients with anxiety. Unfortunately you can't use nitrous while you're pregnant or else that would be one thing i could suggest. Just remember to breath in and our through your nose and try and remember that the dentist has your best interest in mind and if you need a break, let them know and they should give you some time to calm down. If you have an ipod or have music to listen to sometimes that helps our patients that are nervous especially if they crank it up so they can't hear the instruments that the dentist is using. I hope that helps even a little bit. we're here for you :)

    Thanks!

I am thinking of the ipod.
