We didn't. When we traveled w/ DS, he was in his infant carseat the whole time w/ the seatbelt strapped over the seat.
Also while we were driving we used the seat-belt strapped over the seat as well, and did not use the base.
Check the instruction manual that came w/ the infant seat -- it will show you how to use it with the seat belt instead of the LATCH system for the vehicle.
We also just brought the manual and strapped the carseat in with the seatbelt. We intended to bring the base, but it was just too much to carry that and all of DD's other stuff, and we didn't want to add extra weight to our luggage. It worked out just fine.

Ditto. On the plane, she rides in our lap. In the cab or rent car, we just loop the seat belt over the seat. We have enough to lug on the plane without the base.
