Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

So, whats with the weird random temp?

Jack has had a weird random up and down fever all afternoon.  Highest has been around 102*, and has now plateaued out around 100*.  He's had Tylenol twice, and I'll probably give him another dose before bed.  He's not showing any other symptoms of anything other than the fever.  Weird??

  • strange... is he teething?

  • So, you just randomly take his temp throughout the day?
  • No, he has all his teeth (other than his 24 mo molars).  And yes, DCP took his temp several times this afternoon when it was clear he was running a fever.  And now I've taken it several times this evening.

  • Maybe it's an ear infection?  My son got a high fever with no symptoms a few months ago and it ended up being an ear infection.

  • Roseola?  DS had an unexplained high fever with no other symptoms when he was 9 months.  After a few days he felt better but had a red rash and then the pedi realized it was roseola.  Hope your LO's fever goes down :)

  • No rash ... and I guess it *could* be an ear infection ... but he's acting completely normal and he's never had one before.  I'm totally at a loss here.

  • forgive me for asking the obvious, but if feels and is acting fine, what is your issue?

Not saying this is it, but the rash comes at the end of the unexplained fever, after a few days.  Once you get the rash, the fever should be over or coming to an end.

I'm just wondering what the deal is.  ::shrugs::  This hasn't ever happened before.  Do kids get fevers for no apparent reason?  I'm honestly asking here.

  • I would imagine low grade fevers w/out any other symptoms is not uncommon.
  • My pedi said at this age it could just be a random virus. I have taken DS in twice now for a temperature and no other symptoms. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't his ears. The temperature lasted 3-4 days and then was just gone. They said alternate Tylenol and motrin and push fluids. I hate the unexplained fevers and the fact they can't tell you what is wrong. Hopefully the fever goes away soon and he continues with no other symptoms.
