1st Trimester

When did/will you...

..dye or hi-lite your hair? I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions so I'm just curious to see what you ladies are doing or have done.

Re: When did/will you...

  • I had it done in first tri, my hairdresser said everything would be fine, but she did know up front that I was KU!

    It was just hi lights!

  • I had hi lights at 9 weeks.
  • Hi!!!!  :D

My doc said to wait until second trimester b/c of the fumes.  I was thinking of getting my hair highlighted but still haven't.

  • my doc recommends waiting until 2nd tri. i don't dye my hair, so i'm no help!
  • My dr also recommended waiting until 2nd tri.  I am going to dye my hair as soon as I get the all clear from my dr.  Fortunately, I just have a little gray by the roots, but my hair is thick enough to hide it for now.

  • My doc said that there is no proof of hair dye harming the fetus but why expose your child to the toxic fumes when you don't have to?  She then said that if I really wanted to dye my hair to wait until 2nd tri.

I'm dying my hair next week!  I can't hold off any longer!

  • I had highlights and decided I just wanted to have it dyed all back to my natural brown (or close to it) so I just did that last Sunday.  The fumes didn't bother me, but I can see how that might have a few weeks ago.  I don't plan on coloring again, but mostly because my hair is growing like crazy and it's so expensive!

  • I'm a hairdresser and I colored and highlighted my hair during my first trimester with my DD and plan on highlights next week. My doctor said it was fine. If you get your hair highlighted with foils, the color doesn't touch your scalp. But if you are sensitive to some smells it may bother you, if you aren't in a well ventilated area.

I work around perms and color all day long and have never had any problems.

  • I had my hair dyed around 7 weeks. My doctor said it was fine.
  • I have done it several times during My 1st Tri. The doc said it is fine because it is just on your hair and not being absorbed into the skin
  • I actually had an appointment to color my hair on 12DPO when I got my digital BFP. I had talked to my hair dresser when I was TTC and she said it was ok to dye/highlight and that the only potential problem would be us not being able to tolerate the smell, or that our crazy hormones might effect the dye working properly. Other than that, I think we're ok. There's not research stating otherwise.
  • I just had foiled highlights done last week. As long as you're just doing highlights and you're using foil, the chemical shouldn't touch your skin.
  • I bought henna to use. I know it will be absolutely futile.
