Who's had a UTI?

So, I never have, and WebMD has diagnosed with about 87 different maladies. Here is my deal:

Last night I got out of bed around 11:30pm to get a snack. While in the kitchen, I got an overwhelming urge to PEE MY PANTS. I ran to the bathroom, and literally nothing. Not a drop. Got up, back to kitchen. Same overwhelming urge - not a drop. After about 45 minutes of this, I decided to just stay on the toilet. Was probably there for at least 30 minutes, just "pushing" ... and every few pushes a couple drops would squeeze out. It kinda burned too, but not when I peed - just when I had the URGE to pee.

After all that pushing, the urge finally went away. I had DH get me a glass of cran juice, chugged it, and I got some sleep. Woke up at 3am to do it again. Fell back asleep finally, and woke up this morning back to my regular pee habits. No issues since.

So... disappearing UTI? Do those even go away on their own? Did the cran juice really help (another google suggestion)?

...If they come back tonight I am DEFINITELY calling my doctor, I just want to know what I'm describing to her :)

Re: Who's had a UTI?

  • Sound like a UTI. The urge too pee is caused by inflammation of the bladder so you get a sensation of fullness even if you aren't.  Not sure why it just went away. I'd still ask your OB if he wants a urine sample. A simple UTI can become a kidney infection if left to worsen.  Not saying that will happen to you, just might want to get it checked out.

  • One glass of cranberry juice won't do anything for you, fyi, it takes about a gallon over the course of 12 hours to even have a prayer.  That being said, it does sound like a UTI although I have been having the same thing happen over the past couple of weeks and it comes and goes.  I'm planning to ask the midwife on Thursday about it because I just don't feel like its worth a trip in since it does go away (but then again, I've had UTIs before and this isn't quite the same).

So, in summary, I'm entirely no help Stick out tongue

  • I've only ever had one that was confirmed, but I'll never forget that feeling, exactly like you described.

If I ever feel anything like it now, I chug the cran and blueberry juice and it usually goes away on it's own in a day or so.  Someone else suggested POM juice to me too, haven't tried it yet though.

  • I just got over one. I don't believe it goes away that fast, I had to take antibiotics for 10 days. I suggest checking it out because of the seriousness with the kidneys.
  • Oh, I forgot to mention:

I had my Midwife appt yesterday too, so I gave a urine sample. I'm assuming if it IS a UTI, it would show up. Yes/no?

  • Never had one while pregnant but did just before (all that freakin' BD-ing). Anyway it can feel like that and yes I've had guzzling cranberry juice alleviate the symptoms of a mild one. Keep lots of fluids in you and keep drinking the cranberry juice, it helps the pain and also helps flush out the bacteria. You're right though, get a dr to diagnose if you think you might have one.

  • My midwives always test for UTIs, don't know what else they test for, but they should have let you know if the test strip popped for it.

    Is that an immediate test?

  • Hello,

i actually had your same symptoms, so i mentioned them to my OBGYN and he checked me and he just subscribed me some AMOXIXILLIN  for 10 days... so i think if even the urge or burning when away just consult it with your doctor :)

  • Sounds like a UTI to me...I've had at least 15 of them pre-pregnancy. Once, the symptoms disappeared and I thought that it went away on its own. Wrong. Several days later I ended up at the ER with a kidney infection and a catheter, not fun. I would call Dr or midwife and let them know about your symptoms.

  • I had the same problem a few nights ago. I drank some cranberry juice and now I've been taking a cranberry pill every day. I seem to be okay now and no more issues. I've had UTI's before. They are not fun. I've had them so bad that I had blood in my urine but thankfully I wasn't pregnant at the time. I've heard it's common to get them when your pregnant and it makes me nervous so I've been drinking lots of water and taking my cranberry pills.

Yeah, there's a dip stick that changes colors (my midwife uses one with like 7 different pads on it for the things they test for including sugar and protein).  If that test pops positive, they'll send out for a more inclusive one that will tell the type of bacteria to make sure they have the right antibiotic.  Are you seeing Physicians & Midwives?  That's who I saw the first pregnancy and they test for UTIs at every visit.

  • I've had peeing issues like this, but never an UTI.  It's just really annoying but usually goes away.  That being said, I do get nervous about it!

I am in fact seeing P&M... if they automatically test should I wait til tomorrow to see if they contact me, or should I just call their advise nurse now? Definitely can't afford a full on kidney infection to put me in the hospital!!!

  • I've had one (or two, back to back, can't tell) since early early pg and I have zero symptoms. They caught it from that first 8wk apt where they do a ton of stuff, take a lot of blood, and usually do a clean catch. They caught it the second time (after a course of antibi's) doing the f/u clean catch.

Anyhow I've had several while non-pg and that is what they were like for me......except the disappearing part.......I'd get checked out regardless what happens tomorrow. Don't wanna mess with these things, they are evil.
