Do growth spurts hurt?

I was told by the lactation consultant at our hospital that big growth spurts might cause baby to be more cranky because they are hurting and that taking pain meds might take the edge off for LO. Just wondering what you thought of this and if you think it's true. I hate the idea of my baby being in pain.

well, you do hear about teens having "growing pains" from those growth spurts.. though I don't ever remember being in pain?? So maybe...?

I wouldn't give meds though.. I don't like giving them unless necessary. Plus there's a study out saying that kids who get Tylenol before 1 have a higher rate of asthma for some reason.

I think there is some truth to that. Just think about it, their teeny little bodies are growing at such a rapid rate I'm sure they could feel that. Their bones are growing so quickly and all these other things going on inside them. Why do you think that most babies during growth spurts are cranky or fussy?

I had horrific growing pains growing up. My muscles were super tight and my long bones (arms and legs) felt like someone was breaking them. I think I was an extreme case because I'd grow 4+ inches at a time.

Um growth spurts may be uncomfortable, and can hurt, but pain meds? No, that's crazy, at least for babies.
