3rd Trimester

is swelling still a concern w/ low BP?

As a rule I almost always have low blood pressure in the 90/60 range, pregnant or not. That's my norm.

At my last appt on Friday I had a tiny amount of protein in my urine but my MFM/OB wasn't concerned because it's happened before.

Today my face and hands are swelling a little bit (enough to be able to see my cheeks when I look forward, and for my rings not to come off) along with both feet instead of jsut the one.

Is that really a big deal though? If I go in, I know my blood pressure won't be high which would signal that it could be pre-e. I'm also a week from my due date so swelling is to be expected right? (I've never gotten this far in a pregnancy so I feel like a newbie. lol!)

  • my dr says swelling isn't a concern unless your BP is high.

my swelling has gotten absolutely horrible since the beginning of my 38th week, i have no spaces between my toes, and i actually have a wrinkle of flesh between my foot and calf, my ankles are gone. I was really worried but my dr said it's normal at this late in the pregnancy and not to worry. it's still really uncomfortable though. i feel like my skin is going to split open

  • I actually just called my doctors office for the same issue yesterday.  I have been swelling really bad and had a headache for over a week.  Nurse called me back and said since my BP has been normal isn't wasn't anything to worry about.
  • I'm a 90s/60s gal too. When I started feeling like garbage and swelling with DD, my BP was 124/82. That was a significant rise in my BP and the OB took note.  I was put on bedrest on Monday and got induced on Friday. By that point my BP was 160/100.

My advice: go somewhere (dr's office or automated BP machine at Wal-Mart) and make sure that you BP isn't up for you. Better to be safe than sorry.

Also, I'm so excited that your DH made it back in town before Reem2.0 makes her debut!

  • I would keep an eye on your BP.  Mine was really low (100/62 usually or close to that) but as I started retaining water, it has shot up over the last 3 weeks.  I was retaining close to 13 lbs in water weight!!! (My total weight gain prior to this the entire pregnancy was only 12 1/2 lbs!)

I have cut almost ALL sodium out of my diet and in 5 days since my doc apt all the water weight has come off completely and my BP has gone back down to almost my normal range.

So, while it isnt something to worry about if your BP STAYS low...it can be a driving force to make your BP go high very very fast!  I would monitor your BP once or twice a day if you notice it starting to go up...that's what most docs advise.

  • craziheazo - Thanks!!! I'm pretty happy that she waited until DH came home too. It's also good to hear advice from someone else with low BP's.
