Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How do you protect your nips from a toothy baby?

Other than the painful first two weeks, BFing has been miraculously easy for me.  Unfortunately, DD's bottom tooth is starting to really hurt me.  DH had an idea to modify a nip shield so that it can cover the base where the tooth keep rubbing.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

  • DO NOT cut the nipple shield or it will cut you or your DD.  Honestly you get used to it.  It gets worse when the top 2 are coming in, but then you get in a groove again.  Stas has 8 teeth and I hardly ever feel them and ::knock on wood:: she doesn't bite.

  • If the bottom tooth is scratching you then she probably doesn't have a proper latch. From the way DS nurses his tongue covers his bottom teeth, but the top ones scrape me.

Have you gone to see a LC?

Hmm, it only scraped really bad last night.  She had a fat top lip (no clue, don't ask), so maybe that messed up her latch.  Now that you mention it, I usually do see her tongue covering her bottom teeth.  And no, I haven't seen an LC since the weekend she was born.
